Trojans Place Third In 10th Annual Greene Soccer Tournament

Marauders’ offensive pressure leads to 3-0 win at home

GREENE – The 10th Annual Greene Soccer Tournament featured four teams from Section IV, two being considered elites in the local area. Chenango Forks, one of the top teams of the section, captured the tournament title after defeating Dryden 4-3 in the championship game after overcoming a two goal deficit on Saturday at the home pitch of the Greene Trojans.

The tournament host Trojans fell to Dryden in the opening round by a final of 2-0, handing currently ranked No. 12 in the state Greene the first loss in 2019.

With the score at 0-0 following the intermission, Nolan Weik of the visiting Dryden team scored on a loose ball scrum in front of the net after teammate Casey Phillips served in the cross ball, setting up the scoring opportunity.

Holding the 1-0 lead, Dryden was able to add an insurance goal with only 2:03 left in the game. With an assist already attached to his name in the game, Phillips rewarded his own efforts by adding a goal to his stat line.

The Dryden forward riffled a shot into the right corner of the net to secure the 2-0 win and his team’s trip to the tournament’s championship game.

Nick Shoemaker, the Trojans’ keeper, had four saves in the match.

In the consolation game one day later, Greene redeemed themselves by defeating Windsor 2-0.

The Trojans needed just 10 minutes off the clock to register the first goal of the game as Alec Frair was able to score off a Scout McCumiskey cross into the box.

The two teams went into the break with Greene still clinging to the one goal advantage.

It wasn’t until later in the second half that Terriek Brown sealed the victory for the Trojans. With 19:16 left in the contest, Brown cleaned up a deflected shot and put it past the Windsor keeper to give Greene the 2-0 lead and ultimately the final score.

The championship game between Dryden and Chenango Forks started with Dryden’s Jackson Craker opening up the scoring quickly, receiving a cross from colleague Zack Wilson just 3:39 seconds into the match.

Dryden took a two goal lead after a Forks miscue and an own goal was scored on the defensive end with 21:30 remaining in the first.

The Blue Devils’ Donovan Peterson answered with two consecutive goals before the end of the first half, sending the two teams into the halftime break with a 2-2 tie.

Casey Phillips netted the Dryden go-ahead goal early in the second half but Forks’ Peterson drove a direct kick into the net, once again tying the game and completing his hat trick for the night. With the game tied at 3-3, the game saw extra minutes added to the clock for overtime.

In the golden goal overtime session, the first team to score wins and ends the game.

Andrew Illchisin of Chenango Forks needed just 2:40 to finish off Dryden to win 4-3 in overtime.
