Bobcats and Marauders win; OV falls by a goal
ONEONTA – Meeting in the Strong as Heck Soccer Festival, host at the Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta, the Greene Trojans boys club tied the Westhill Warriors – 2018 Class B New York State Champions –1-1 after a scoreless first half.
Greene struck first on the scoreboard with a Scout McCumiskey goal as 10:02 remained in the contest. McCumiskey fielded a long through ball distributed by teammate Calob Davenport and ripped a shot into the lower side net, out of Westhill keeper Ian Prebish’s reach.
The Trojans held onto the lead in the back-and-forth battle between the two teams until the final 1:36 in the game due defensive header miscue. Westhill’s Jackson Powers then collected the ball to go one-on-one with Greene’s keeper Nick Shoemaker and put the ball into the net.
The Warriors nearly recorded the go ahead goal with 32 seconds left on the clock, however Shoemaker came up big with his third big save of the match, preserving the tie with the defending state champions.
The 11th ranked team in Class C played on Friday also, defeating Walton 1-0.
Outshooting the Warriors 25-1 in a 2018 Midstate Athletic Conference championship rematch, the Trojans’ Nolan Butler was able to break the nil-nil tie with four minutes left in the contest. His unassisted goal kept Greene’s undefeated record intact.
Shoemaker made one save in Friday’s contest.
Greene, now 5-0-1, travels to B-G on Monday for a 4:30 p.m. game.

Sherburne-Earlville 1, Mount Markham 0
SHERBURNE – The Marauders finally returned to winning column as the S-E offense did enough to get by a refreshed and feisty Mount Markham Mustang team. The young Mustang roster, who Sherburne-Earlville head coach Michael Rodriguez stated is, “full of potential,” suffered their first league loss to the Marauders 1-0 Friday afternoon.
Returning to the Sherburne-Earlville lineup from injury was senior Gabe Irwin. His return was what the Marauders’ offense needed as Irwin’s precision pass to Brogan Winton split the Mustang defense and sent his teammate on the offensive attack.
Winton buried his shot past Mt. Markham’s goal keeper Alex Arkema in the first half.
Through the second half, the S-E defense to hold on for the win as senior sweeper Noah Posson navigated a nearly new defense due to many injuries on the Marauders back line.
S-E’s keeper John Oley recorded his first varsity shutout and helped keep the Marauders’ home record against league opponents perfect this season.
