Trojans start 2019 campaign with 6-1 win over Storm
GREENE – The Greene Trojans captured a victory in their 2019 season opener, defeating recently crowned Sherburne-Earlville Tournament champion and host Unadilla Valley Storm 6-1 Tuesday afternoon.
The Trojans’ midfielder Alec Frair started scoring for the visiting team, netting two unassisted goals in the first 10 minutes of the game.
The Storm rallied back. Behind a push from UV’s back line, Dylan Nichols converted his shot opportunity after the nicely timed pass from teammate Josh Meade to cut Greene’s lead down to a goal before heading into the halftime intermission.
After 15 minutes of scoreless back and forth play to start the second half, the Trojans turned up the heat, scoring four goals over the next seven minutes.
Frair recorded a hat trick as the first of the four-goal rally with the next Greene tally coming from Jonny Lee. Calob Davenport tacked on the fifth and sixth goals for the Trojans to close out the scoring for the contest.
Serving up the goals for Greene were Lee, Ashton Crover, Kolby Finch and Scout McCumisky.
Unadilla Valley’s keeper Brandon Kneale made 10 saves in the loss as the Trojans ripped a total of 16 shots at the goalie. Nick Shoemaker was in the opposite goal and stopped two shots for Greene.
The Trojans (1-0) play next at Afton on Friday at 4:30 p.m. while the Storm are off until Tuesday, September 10 where UV (2-1) will take on Sidney on their home pitch at 4:30 p.m.

Chenango Valley 4, Norwich 0
NORWICH – The young Lady Tornado team took another early season lump with a 4-1 loss to the Chenango Valley Warriors.
CV’s Aubrey Marroquin racked up three goals in the first half on three well-timed passes from teammate Sara Marinaro as the Warriors captured the early lead. Marinaro was rewarded for her first half passing efforts following the intermission with a ball finding the back of the net for Chenango Valley’s final goal of the afternoon.
Prior to the Warriors’ fourth score of the game, Norwich’s Sydney Coggins registered her second goal of the season after carrying a Mackenzie Hess pass to the left baseline of the field.
Coggins used her sound and quick footwork to put a move on the CV defender and fire a hard dribbler past opposing keeper Maddi Trislot. As the ball rolled across the field, it crossed the end-line for the Tornado’s lone goal despite the effort by the Warriors defense to keep the ball out.
With starting goalkeeper Halea Eaton out of the lineup for Tuesday’s game, Norwich head coach Doug Coggins pulled up freshman keep Maddie Vaughn. Seeing 12 shots, Vaughn stopped seven Chenango Valley attempts in her varsity debut.
“We showed better fitness level for our second outing,” said Coach Coggins. “Each girl really tried and did not quit. One of our issues, however, is the inability to remember the little easy things. We have other things we need to work on as we are a work in progress and a very young team.”
The Tornado’s head coach also went on to say that the forwards had looks at the goal from both side of the field and his team is close to scoring more.
Hess, Sydney Coggins and Taylor McCarthy all had shots on goal against the Warriors.
Next up for Norwich is Susquehanna Valley on Thursday. The Tornado will host the Sabers for a 4:30 p.m. game time. Norwich also has the Greene Girls Soccer Tournament on their schedule for this weekend, giving the team four games in five days.
