SHERBURNE – Sherburne town officials are hazy about the future of a proposed meat processing facility initially approved by board members more than four years ago.
In the spring of 2015, the town green-lighted an idea to build a $20 million meat processing facility along County Road 23 in Sherburne. The business model projected the creation of 100-150 new jobs in the area.
Town officials said the project – which had been spearheaded by a company called All In Meats, Inc. – fell apart in 2016, citing financial barriers which prevented All In Meats from following through. The original proposal sought a 100,000 square foot beef butchering facility, adjacent to Curtis Lumber on County Road 23, capable of processing roughly 350-500 cows per day.
Now new plans of a slaughterhouse are being pitched to the town's planning board by the site owner, Jim Webb, who notified board members that he's researching the feasibility of a meat processing facility that would likely satisfy the same requirements of the initial project approved in 2015.
But it's all up in the air, explained Sherburne Supervisor Charlie Mastro. And despite site ownership, there's still plenty of legal hoops which Webb would have to jump through.
