Norwich falls to Sabers by two, still need one win for chance at playoffs

GREENE – The Sidney Warriors answered Greene’s four-run second winning by tallying 12 in the fourth to defeat the second-seed Trojans in the Midstate Athletic Conference Championship semifinal Thursday afternoon.

Greene struck first in the game, scoring four runs on three hits, two walks and an error by the Sidney defense.

Logan Kennedy led the frame off with a battle at the plate, recording the walk after five pitches. Two batters later and a stolen base by Kennedy, Trenton Rapp hit a ground ball to shortstop but the play attempt by the Warriors resulted in no outs as they were unable to get the lead runner at third.

Kennedy scored the first run of the game on an error during Hogan Ludolph’s at-bat. Ludolph ended up on first with a walk.

As if it was almost on instant replay, Rapp scored on an error while Ludolph picked up a stolen base.

Grayson Flanagan’s line drive double scored Ludolph from second, giving the Trojans a 3-0 lead. As the next batter, Owen Howell ripped a hard ground ball to the shortstop. With two outs in the inning, Flanagan was able to get a good jump on the contact and was able to score from second on the attempt to get Howell out at first. The inning ended with Greene leading 4-0 after the next batter.

The score after third inning remained the same as both team were able to get three outs quickly. Sidney saw three batters in the frame while Greene’s Brandyn Scott picked up a single to give the Trojans four hitters in the inning.

However, in the fourth is when the Warriors took control of the game. Using 11 hits, the Sidney offense scored 12 of their 15 runs in the game. The Warriors added two more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Tanner Gifford and Cameron Chabot both came away with two hits for Sidney in the inning. Gifford finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored to fill his stat sheet while teammate Chabot went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs.

All but two Warriors’ batters ended the night with two hits while the team totaled 11 RBIs.

Greene scored another two runs in the bottom of the fifth but the fourth inning damage by Sidney was too much for the Trojans to overcome.

Owen Howell led Greene in the batter’s box, racking up two hits and four at-bats. He added an RBI in the game.

Nick Shoemaker got the start for the Trojans, lasting three and a third innings on the mound. He recorded five strikeouts before coming out in the fourth inning. Flanagan and Kolby Finch split the rest of the time on the hill in relief.

Greene will face Deposit/Hancock in the consolation finals Friday at 4:30 p.m.
