Norwich falls to Windsor, 19-3
MARATHON – Greene’s Logan Kennedy and Nick Shoemaker both came away with four RBIs, finishing the day 3-for-5 at the plate in the Trojans’ 13-7 road win over Marathon Tuesday.
Greene racked up a total of 14 hits in their rout over the home team and recorded 13 RBIs as a team in the process.
The Trojans got things started in the first trip to the plate, scoring five runs in the inning. Grayson Flanagan’s lead-off single was later rewarded as he scored on Shoemaker’s double to right field.
Kennedy’s first at-bat resulted in a fly ball single to nearly the same place, sending Owen Howell and Shoemaker in to score for two of his four RBIs.
Greene added two more runs in the frame when Trenton Rapp drilled a hard ground ball to the shortstop and Kennedy already had a good jump towards home. Kolby Finch scored as the throw to the catcher wasn’t clean, passing to the backstop.
Threatening to score again later in the inning, Marathon’s Caleb Ticknor was able to get out of the bases loaded trouble with his third strikeout of the first.
Ticknor helped his own cause on the mound, driving in one run with his ground ball to right field for Marathon but the Trojans were able to get out of the inning with no other damage done.
Greene tacked on another three runs in the top of the fourth inning as Shoemaker and Kennedy added RBIs to their statline in the frame.
Marathon matched their opponents three runs in the bottom half of the inning but the Trojans’ jumped back out to a commanding 13-4 lead with another five scored in the top of the fifth.
The home team added another three runs to their total but were unable to put together a rally to overcome Greene’s large margin.
Finch was the winning pitcher for Trojans, putting in five innings of work on the hill. He allowed five hits and six runs while striking out four. Flanagan came in to throw two innings in relief and struck out four.
Ticknor took the loss for Marathon, lasting four innings as he surrendered eight hits and eight runs while sitting down seven Greene batters with strikeouts.
The Trojans came away with 15 stolen bases during the game. Five players stole more than one as Kennedy led the way with four.
Marathon finished with six hits in the game as a team. Ticknor and teammate Andrew Tillotsonall managed multiple hits for Marathon.
Greene (3-3) hosts Norwich Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. The non-league game was originally scheduled for a day earlier in the season but the weather has changed the date twice.
