Coggins’ 3-point Shooting Performance Leads No. 6 Norwich To 10 game Winning Streak

By: Meagan Schulz

NORWICH – The Purple Tornado’s Sydney Coggins went 7-for-7 behind the 3-point arc, scoring a game-high 21 in Norwich’s 70-23 win over the visiting Windsor Black Knights Monday night.

Coggins knocked down at least one long ball in each of the four quarters of play and her highest producing stanza was the third when she drained three 3-pointers for nine points.

Norwich opened up the game with a 27 point first quarter as eight different players record points and all 12 on the roster saw playing time in the first eight minutes.

The intense full-court pressure defense by the Tornado contributed to the early double-digit lead. By the end of the first quarter, Norwich head coach Josh Bennett called off the press and dropped back into a half-court defense.

A low scoring second quarter between the two teams was closed out with Windsor going on a 6-0 but Coggins ended it with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer as the two teams went into the halftime break.

The Purple Tornado came out of the intermission and put up another big quarter, scoring 22 points as a team in the third, to extend their lead to 41.

Norwich controlled the glass throughout, grabbing more rebounds than Windsor at both ends of the floor and pushed the tempo. The Tornado also shared the ball well, distributing several assists as the players dished the ball to the open teammate on most of the baskets scored by the home team.

The Norwich defense, whether in the press in the early minutes or the half-court set for the final three quarters of play, forced the Black Knights into many turnovers, converting on the other end of the floor. Windsor was held to under 10 points in all four quarters of the game.

While Coggins led in the scoring column for Norwich, 11 of the 12 players on the roster contributed. Saige Benedict finished with nine points and both Abby Flynn and Halea Eaton kicked in seven points. Emily Evans and Taylor Hansen added six points each.

Hannah Hagerman had nine for Windsor, a team-high in the contest.

Norwich, who remains at the six spot in the New York State Sports Writers Association state rankings, defeated Utica Proctor on Saturday afternoon as well.

The Tornado started off the contest on strong note, again recording a 20-plus point quarter. Norwich jumped out 23-6 lead and outlasted the physical play of Raiders to win 55-42.

Scoring nine of her game-high 14 points was Triniti Myers with her hot shooting from behind the 3-point line.

As a team, Norwich made eight deep balls in the game with seven coming in the first half of play.

Hansen finished with 13 while Flynn chipped in eight for the win.
