HAMILTON – Two Norwich Indoor Track records were broken while two more were set on Tuesday at the John DiMao Memorial Invitational, held at Colgate University. Both the Purple Tornado and the Sherburne-Earlville indoor track teams competed in the meet.
The Norwich 4x200 meter relay team of David Berger, Eric Conant, Nik Barber and Gabe Gawronski topped the record they set a year ago by a half of a second, taking first place in the boys division-I race with a time of 1:34.72. Their finish was three seconds faster than the second place team from Cazenovia.
Unlike the boys team which has competed together for over a year now, the girls 4x200 for Norwich ran together for the first time. Katie Gawronski, Lucie Martin, Angela Carlson and Riley Marsh crossed the finish line with a time of 1:57.26 for second place in the event. With their time, the foursome were two seconds away from breaking the school record set in 2016.
The Purple Tornado’s Katie Gawronski broke a five year old record by more than 10 seconds. The record was held by Kristen Slate at 2:41.3 prior to Tuesday, when Katie Gawronksi finished with a time of 2:31.99 and placed third in the event. The winner ran a time of 2:22.68.
Brother Gabe Gawronski placed first and nearly broke Matt Murray’s record in the 800 meter race, finishing with a time of 1:57.73. Murray still holds the school record set five years ago at 1:56.19 but Gabe hopes to take over the record by the end of the indoor track season as he continues to shave time and come closer each meet.
Gabe won the event by more than 20 seconds, with the second place time coming across the finish line at 2:18.32.
In the first time that the race has been run by Tornado runners, both Justin Bates and Lucie Martin set the 500 meter record. Bates now holds the boys record at Norwich with 1:16.56 while Martin holds the record on the girls side with a time of 1:27.29.
The 4x400 meter boys relay team for Norwich came close to breaking another record as Barber, Noah Bufalini, Berger and Conant took second place in the event. The foursome finished with a time of 3:38.44, two seconds shy of the school’s best time.
