GREENE – As 80 minutes couldn’t determine the outcome of the Greene Trojans and Trumansburg Blue Raiders, 15 minutes of overtime was played. With 6:13 left on the clock in the first extra session, Trumansburg’s Logan Bonn found the back of the net on a free kick, giving the Blue Raiders the win over the No. 2 seed Trojans to move into the Section IV Class C boys soccer finals.
The Trumansburg free-kick was awarded following a Greene foul. Placed just outside the 18 yard box, the Blue Raiders’ Bonn quickly fired a shot as the Trojans’ Kevin Gyurik was lining up defensive wall in front of the ball.
The bang-bang play ended Greene’s chances at a Section IV title.
From the time the ball was place in the middle for the kickoff to the final minute of regulation, the momentum was in favor of the Trojans’ as they held possession for the majority of the game.
Greene took the ball from the middle and immediately applied pressure on the Trumansburg goalkeeper, Richard Prosser.
The Blue Raiders had opportunities but each time they rifled a shot in the direction of the goal, the ball sailed well over the cross bar. On shot did find it’s way into the goal but a foul was called in favor of the Trojans’ and did not count to keep the 0-0 tie intact.
With 12:57 left in the first half, Greene’s River McCumiskey fired a shot that looked like it could drop over the head of the Trumansburg keeper but it held up in the air for a little too long and went over the top of the goal.
Minutes later, McCumiskey send another attempt wide of the far post. The half ended at a 0-0 tie with both teams having good chances.
In the second half, the rain began to pour down on the field but the players did not lose a step and the shots continued to flow. The attempts, however, went high or wide of the goal and the stalemate went on.
Trumansburg saw back-to-back opportunities by their first two corner kicks coming late in the game. With 4:45 remaining, Greene tried to clear the ball away after the first corner, awarding the Blue Raiders another.
