DEPOSIT- This season has been a solid stepping stone for the Oxford Blackhawks girls’ basketball program as they’ve made strides winning multiple games this year while also having a handful of games within arm’s length. Unfortunately for the Blackhawks, their season came to an end by the Deposit Lumberjacks by a score of 54- 33.

The first quarter of action saw the Blackhawks struggle from the start only scoring six points to their Lumberjack foes 17 points. The tide changed as Oxford surged in the second quarter – scoring 13 points, all while putting in work on the defensive end – limiting Deposit to six points in the period.

With the Blackhawks rejuvenated and cutting an 11 point lead to four points with the second half still to be played, Oxford marched to the locker room with the momentum. However, Deposit responded in the third and fourth quarters.

Led by the play of Rainna Butler who scored nine of her team’s 18 third period points, put the visiting Blackhawks on notice that this game was not going to be given away and the Lumberjacks were willing to stand and fight.

This impressive offensive display was equally as impressive when looked at on the defensive end, the Lumberjacks only allowed four points in the third quarter and only let one Oxford player score – Kylie Roys. Roys, recorded all eleven of her points over the final 16 minutes in the hopes of tallying yet another Blackhawk victory.

As fate would have it however, Deposit’s third and fourth quarter rallies proved to be too much for the Blackhawks who were outscored 31-14 in the second half, ultimately bringing a conclusion to their basketball season.

“We played a great second quarter. Unfortunately half time broke our momentum,” said head coach Chris Palmer.
