Oxford Holiday tourney completion: Greene emerges the champion

OXFORD – Due to upstate New York winter weather the Oxford holiday tournament consolation and championship game were postponed – with the postponement come and gone Greene emerged as this year's champion after defeating Walton 42-34.

The championship game, played in Oxford on Saturday, Jan. 7, as Greene jumped out to a huge 12-4 lead over Walton. This lead along with the solid play from the Trojan's leading scorer – McKenna Sergi, along with Emma Smith – Greene managed to take the halftime lead into the locker room at 20-13.

Walton would chip into the lead somewhat heading into the fourth period, as they trailed by just 28-22 at the beginning of the fourth, however, the lady Trojans were able to secure 14 fourth period points to shutdown any notion of a comeback attempt.

Emma Smith who finished the game, second in scoring with 13 points also snagged 11 rebounds – while Sergi finished with a team high 14 points scored in the game.

Smith was subsequently named the Most Valuable Player in the Oxford Holiday Tournament.

• During the consolation game, played earlier that same day, it was Oxford who took the win – their second win of the season – when they defeated Afton by a score of 41-40.

It was Raigen Ehly of Oxford, with her team high 13 points scored in the consolation game, that truly helped lift Oxford to the win, as they claimed a third place finish in their home tournament.

Ehly scored seven points in the second period of the game this past Saturday, to help contribute to a solid second period of play which saw five different athletes score en route to a 17 point period.

“We were down 14-0 after a (Paige) Polizzi three with 3:25 left in the first quarter,” said Oxford head coach Chris Palmer. “17-1 in the second quarter, and we were up three at the half.”

Oxford dug themselves out of a massive hole in the first period to climb to a staggering score differential in the second period where the Blackhawk offense managed 17 point, as the Oxford defense held Afton to just one point.

Leading Afton in scoring was Polizzi with 22 points scored in the game – however, despite the superstar in Polizzi and despite the rough start Oxford clung to the notion of winning to pull out the one point win.

Up next for Oxford girls varsity basketball, they will travel to Unatego on Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 7:15 p.m. while the Blackhawk boys will play on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 7:15 p.m.
