Tornado Girls Stomp The Black Knights On The Road

By: Cameron Turner

WINDSOR – The girls varsity basketball team of Norwich has returned to the court for their 2016-2017 season – where they opened up the flood gates for the first of many opponents who will need to contend with the returning division champions.

Norwich traveled to Windsor on Dec. 7, where they promptly swept the court with the lady Black Knights, winning 67-24.

The 42 point victory began when Norwich immediately fell into their groove early and often in the game – posting first and second period scores of 17 and 26 respectively.

“In pockets we executed our defense to perfection and we got a lot of transition baskets,” said Norwich head coach Josh Bennett.

Bennett's squad led Windsor at the half by an impressive margin at 43-11. Leading Norwich's charge on the night was Meghan Komendarek. The senior was the lone Tornado to post double digit scoring on opening day, hitting 2-2 from the free throw line and sinking 10 two-point shots from inside – amassing a total of 22 points.

In the loss for Windsor, they would attempt to show some fire in the third period – following a disappointing half – as they posted up 10 points to Norwich's 14. This fight from the lady Black Knights was soon stifled by the dominant Tornado defenders who choked out any idea of a comeback – allowing a mere three points to be scored on them to close out the game.

“It's early in the season, there is still a lot to improve upon but I was happy to see us start with a convincing win,” said coach Bennett.

Norwich (1-0 overall) will hold their home opener later on this evening, Dec. 9, at 7:45 p.m. when Chenango Valley will visit the Tornado.
