The Vikings Avoid The Shutout Season With First Win In Two Years

By: Cameron Turner

DERUYTER – Coming into their final game of the season, the Otselic Valley Vikings boys soccer team had slid to a sub-par record of 0-14-1, however, their last game proved to be their very best of the season when they downed DeRuyter on the road by a score of 1-0.

Coming into the Oct. 17, matchup, Otselic Valley had previously fell to Blessed Virgin Mary by a score of 6-0 on Oct. 6.

“The score unfortunately made the game look more lop sided than it was,” said OV head coach Jacob Preston.

Preston and his squad then suffered another defeat at the hands of McGraw on Oct. 7, by a score of 8-0.

“McGraw was a much better team and dominated all game long. It was our senior night, and we recognized our two seniors, Peter Kalin, injured player who has been our score keeper season long, and Titus Reichard who has been senior captain and our utility player who plays all over the field,” said coach Preston.

These two defeats landed the Vikings in a make or break moment, as they traveled to DeRuyter for their final game of the 2016 season – and hoping for that ever so elusive first win of the season.

“The OV boys have notched there first win of the season on the last game of the season. What a great relief for the players, coach, and fans. This is our first win in two seasons. Not to mention our first goal since seven games ago on Sept. 23rd,” said coach Preston.

The Vikings took the halftime lead of 1-0 off a unassisted shot and score from Micah Lyon – this marked Lyon's only varsity goal to-date, but a very important one at that.
