SMYRNA – For the 15th straight year, residents of Chenango County will be treated to one of the area’s scariest destinations this Halloween.
Rogers Haunted Hill, in the Town of Smyrna, has been frightening generations for more than a decade. Now considered a Halloween staple, the attraction continues to draw hundreds – if not thousands – to its maze-like den of terrors, featuring all the ghastly ghouls, creepy clowns and things that go bump in the night that anyone could want. From dangling spiders and skeletons to the occasional severed limb (or head), there’s always something new each year at the annual fright-fest
“We started out just for the kids in Plymouth. They had nothing to do for Halloween. So we just started out little in a barn,” said Beverly Rogers, who originally came up with the idea for the famed attraction. “Then next year, everyone said, 'well why don't you have more people'? So we made it a little bigger and starting inviting people.”
Screams of terror will cascade through the hills of Chenango County as visitors will experience some new attractions that the site will offer this year, including a buckling bridge, an eerie saloon and a scary movie.
However, all of those shrills and shrieks are not in vain. The attraction costs just $7 per person, which aids in both the upkeep every year, as well as goes towards cancer research. “We try to keep our prices down so that people can afford to come,” said Rogers. “We have a pretty good turn out usually, and we do it whether it's raining or not.”
Children five and under are allowed free admission, and organizers ask guests to not bring infants.
