Underwhelming play from Norwich hands CV Warriors the win on the road

BINGHAMTON – Norwich Purple Tornado Football traveled down to the land of the Warriors, to take on Chenango Valley in a divisional showdown. What ensued was a Warrior domination of Norwich, as the hard-nosed then 1-3 CV team ground their way to a solid 33-14 win.

“We just didn't execute. We came out flat and didn't match their enthusiasm,” said Norwich head coach Mike Chrystie. “We played uninspired football and I need to do a better job of making sure that doesn't happen again.”

Despite a struggling offensive unit throughout, the defense of the Tornado played well, holding the Warriors to no first quarter points. This play from the defense allowed the Tornado offense to miraculously manage the first points of the game, taking the early 7-0 lead with 1:41 left in the first quarter, followed a three yard quarterback-keeper as Cole Rifanburg found the end-zone for the score.

With a slight bit of momentum on their side, Norwich failed to capitalize on the early lead, allowing 33 unanswered points to hit the scoreboard for CV before another Tornado player would find the end-zone.

Of those 33 points scored on Norwich, 20 came in just the second quarter of play off of runs from Nate Marble at 35 yards out, Chris Singleton at 15 yards out, and Sam Trebilcock at 26 yards out. Despite the early lead for the Tornado, they would enter into halftime with a 20-7 deficit facing them when they returned.

Norwich was hoping to overcome the 13-point deficit with improved play coming out of the half, but a 67 yard run to the house for CV's Chris Singleton just :54 seconds into the third quarter took any remaining wind left from the Norwich sails.

After a failed fourth down try, Norwich found some inspiration when they took over from their own one yard line – this re-found drive was shortly snuffed out when Rifanburg tossed the ball only to have a Chenango Valley play jump the route and intercept the pass. CV's Singleton punched the ball in some plays later from three yards out, giving the Warriors a 33-7 lead with a 1:53 left in the third quarter.

With a whole quarter to go, the Tornado players, however, flat they played at times or however many missed opportunities and tackles recorded, did not surrender as a whole to CV – as just 1:50 later after the interception Norwich found themselves punching the ball in, Cole Rifanburg run from 28 yards out, to close out the quarter.

Despite an onside kick recovered from Norwich to open the final quarter, the quarter would yield nothing in the score column for either team. With the back and forth push of the two teams ensuing, drawing the final score, to 33-14 handing Norwich their second loss of 2016.

In the win for CV, they were led on the ground by Singleton with 166 yards rushing and three touchdowns, followed by Sam Trebilcock with 132 yards rushing and one touchdown, Nate Marble with 53 yards rushing and one touchdown, Zaphir Hill with 16 yards rushing, Aaron Trumino with 8 yards rushing, Joseph Testani with 8 yards on the ground, and Nathan Aylward with five yards.
