NEW BERLIN – This past weekend from Friday, Aug. 12 until closing on Sunday, Aug. 14, New Berlin played host to roughly 20,000 motocross enthusiasts and fans alike as they gathered for the 31st running of The Unadilla National Motocross.
This premeire event is the culmination essentially of another great year of Unadilla races, as they claimed the tenth stop of twelve on the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship Series circuit.
Coming into the weekend, many returning superstars in the sport were poised to give some impressive performances. And with a weekend which was predicted to have much rain, it was in fact the heat that played more of a role in the races than the waterworks did.
“It really was very hot and humid, much hotter than previous years. Issues like heat stroke and dehydration took their toll. A little bit muddy to start on friday from rain on Wednesay night, so that made it challenging a little, but overall the track was great all weekend,” said Casey Huntley, Media Relations at Next Level Sports Management.
With the culmination of the weekend races happening on Saturday durong the pro races, fans were not disapointed as they were treated to some of the nations best riders.
The first moto began at 1 p.m. for the 250cc and 450cc races, with the second moto for each pro class following shortly after.
The weekend at Unadilla saw Ken Roczen of Germany finish first in both motos, as he impressively swept the 450cc class. This dominating win in both moto's at the 450cc level has spring boarded Roczen into a solid 63 point lead over Eli Tomac, of Cortez, Colorado. Roczen has currently compiled a series leading 484 series points, compared to Tomac's 421, which holds him as the only other rider to crack the 400 point level, notching him into second place as of now.
At the 250cc pro level, it was Cooper Webb, of Newport, N.C., who swept his class as he dominated both of his motos for a first place finish at Unadilla. This win further cements Webb as the possible 2016 Pro Motocross champion as he currently leads the series over Joey Savatgy, of Thomasville, Ga., and Alex Martin, Millville, Minn. Both Savatgy and Martin added to the surprises a this years Unadilla races, as Martin was involved in some carnage during the first moto which knocked him back some distance as he would only finish 13th in the first moto before claiming a fifth in the second moto.
Savatgy would fair much better in the first moto than Martin as he claimed a second place finish at the 250cc class. However, the heat and humidity would take it's toll on Savatgy in the second moto as he would drop all the way back to finish 32nd. With both Savtgy and Martin currently tied at 341 league points on the season, their looks to be an exciting race at the 250cc class come the eleventh stop on the tour.
With Roczen and Webb comfortably leading their classes, they are both hoping to lock up their series 2016 championship come next race, held in Maryland come August 20. Before they head to Indianna for the final moto of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship Series of 2016.
