169th Chenango County Fair kicks-off today

NORWICH – The 169th annual Chenango County Fair gets underway today, bringing one of the county’s most enduring summertime traditions back to the fairgrounds in Norwich.

Each year, more than 40,000 people flock to the fairgrounds for the spectacle of sights and sounds that make up the Chenango County Fair. And with some big events on the docket again this year, organizers say they’re hoping for an even greater turnout.

“We have a lot of exciting things lined up, so we’re hoping people can come out and enjoy themselves,” said Chenango Ag Society President Mary Weidman. “It’s always a great event that has something fun for everyone.”

Gates officially open at noon today; and the day’s all about horse racing as NYS Sire Stakes harness racing takes to the fairgrounds racetrack. Races start early afternoon and continue throughout the day.

Today is also free admission day, courtesy of NBT Bank. Thousands of people are expected to make their way to the fairgrounds throughout the afternoon and especially tonight after the 4-h and Fireperson’s Parade kicks-off fair celebrations at 7 p.m.

“We have over 60 units in the parade this year, so it should be really good,” Weidman said, adding that fire departments from all over the county participate. The parade starts at Midland Drive and marches down East Main Street before finishing at the fairground gates.

Festivities will continue this evening with two free musical performances at the entertainment tent. At 6 p.m., the Chenango Blues Fest will sponsor Buffalo Barfield, a truely “American” singer and songwriter who serves up a mix of traditional country, western swing, folk, bluegrass, and old-time Gospel.

At 8 p.m., up-and-coming country star Alyssa Trahan will take the stage, singing songs from her EP title “Daisies.” The concert is free to fairgoers thanks to sponsorship by McCredy Motors LLC.

Different events are scheduled throughout the week, including performances by Bruce Beadle and the TC Horns, Cadence Entertainment, and the LJ Gates Band. As always, there’s also countless other attractions for people to enjoy, said Weidman, including fireworks on Wednesday (with free admission sponsored by Chobani), the New York State Tractor Pull Association at the grandstand Thursday and Saturday, karaoke competitions Friday, and demolition derbies on Sunday.
