BINGHAMTON – The Chenango Hellcats Legion baseball team stepped onto Conlon Field on Friday, July 8, looking for a much needed league win. The Hellcats saw a dominating performance from one individual among others, helping them secure a 10-1 win over Post 1645 Binghamton.
“It was a great game. Tommy Voce, it was really good to have him back. He was on fire, he was unstoppable. He destroyed it,” said Hellcats head coach Jason Miller. “Our team, if you put these guys on a field, you cant really stop them when they’re on, and they were on.”
Voce stood on the mound for The Hellcats for the entire seven innings, tossing out 102 pitches in the game. Of those 102 pitches 62 were strikes, in a game that saw Voce secure an astounding 12-strikeouts, with only four hits and two walks.
Notably Voce would go 3-3 at the plate for The Hellcats, recording one RBI on the night.
Binghamton's Tim Oshea would look to match Voce's production on the day when he pitched for seven innings as well, however, a slew of Hellcat batters would see to it that his day was not as favorable.
Oshea would throw 148 pitches in the game, recording 82 strikes, however, allowing eight hits, eight walks, and only recording five strikeouts.
“Their (Binghamton's) pitching wasn’t bad at all. Just once we started settling in on him (Oshea), we were just cranking them. He threw hard so when we were hitting them we were hitting them hard. We had a couple hits that almost went out. A couple guys were just crushing the ball,” said coach Miller.
The Hellcats would nearly earn the shutout win over Binghamton, as they successfully would claim an early 5-0 lead after just two innings – tacking on two more runs in the fifth inning, moving them to 7-0 at the time.
However, errors on The Hellcats side would steal that shutout away from them – Hellcats two errors, Binghamton three errors.
“They had a couple good hits, but we gave up that run on error,” said coach Miller of Binghamton's lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
