The Perfect Clinch

By: Cameron Turner

NORWICH – It was all the Norwich Pony League team when they hosted Sidney on June 27, winning with yet another dominating performance, winning 10-0.

Norwich would successfully clinch a playoff berth with the win, riding on the back of their pitcher Mike Trevisani, and his defense behind him backing him up.

“Mike Trevisani threw a perfect game, that is the rarest feat in baseball. The best thing about a perfect game is that along with the pitcher doing his job, he needs to have the defense back him up and they did that. We just came together tonight defensively,” said Norwich head coach Nick McCullough.

Trevisani would indeed record the perfect game against Sidney, throwing the entire seven inning game, while striking out 16-Sidney batters, allowing no walks, no hits, and therefore no runs en route to Norwich's 10-0 beat down of Sidney.

“I tip my hat to Mike and the defense,” said McCullough. “My entire career, Mike Trevisani's perfect game was the most dominate I have ever witnessed. From little league, to high school, to college and now coaching, it was great.”

Despite the exceptional pitching on the mound for Norwich, they would struggle somewhat at the plate, as they only recorded five hits in the game.

McCullough noted that Sidney's pitcher – Scott, who pitched for the first five innings of the game – would get the best of his batters as they struggled to connect with the ball early on, only gaining their first hit in the fourth inning of play.

“Of those five hits, four were in the fifth and sixth innings, I tip my hat to their pitching as well, they got us in the first four,” said McCullough. “We made the adjustments, it might take an at bat or two but we will adjust. I just have to keep reminding them of the situations we're in and then we can make the pitcher throw the pitch they might not want to throw and that is what we do. I told them, just put the ball in play and see what happens. Sidney is a very good team.”
