WINDSOR – The Windsor Black Knights played host to this years annual Track and Field Invitational on Saturday April 16, that featured 31 different schools including local teams: Norwich, Greene, Harpursville-Afton, Bainbridge-Guilford, and Unadilla Valley.
The eventual team winners on the boys side was Binghamton high school with 87.5-points, while on the girls side, Binghamton conceded to Corning who claimed the crown with 95-points.
Norwich
Norwich Track and Field saw the greatest success from the local teams on boys side of the events when they placed seventh behind Johnson City with 32-points.
The Norwich 4x100 team of David Berger, Eric Conant, Drew Walsh, and Connor Nial had high hopes for the day, but ultimately fell just short of reaching the finals when the ran a 48 second time.
However the 4x800 relay team of Noah Bufalini, Ben Ericksen, Gabe Gawronski, and Ethan Lestico somewhat avenged the shortcoming when they earned a sixth place finish in the finals with a time of 8:46.54.
Gawronski turned right around and ran another impressive 800 meters, this time alone, and found himself medaling at second place overall in the 800 meters with a time of 2:07.84.
While Gawronski's running mate Ben Ericksen chased down the sixth place finish in the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:30.56.
The 4x400 relay also saw Norwich claim twelfth place finish when Gabe Gawronski, Noah Bufalini, Scott Tomanocy, and Ethan Lestico ran a 5:55.60.
Norwich's Eric Conant and Jordan Vinal failed to crack the top ten in the Long Jump but still managed a nice outing for the invitational when they jumped 18'01”, and 17'05” respectively.
Vinal did however jump into the ninth place spot for Triple Jump with his 38'08.50” jump.
It was the Norwich throwers Thomas Reilly and David Bernstein who impressed many on the day when Reilly came away with a first place in the Shot Put, followed by Bernstein in fourth place. Reilly threw a 50'03” throw to claim that spot while Bernstein wasn’t too far behind with a throw of 44'07.75".
It was Bernstein who edged Reilly in the Discus, placing first with his impressive throw of 145'06”, while Reilly managed an eighth place finish with a throw of 123'08”.
The Norwich girls managed a nineteenth place finish overall in team standings as they had a nice outing, but only managed seven points as a team.
Much like the boys 4x100 relay team, the girls team of Marysa. Campbell, Michaela Fazio, Delilah Geislinger, and Hailey Colabelli were seeking an appearance in the finals but fell just short when they ran a time of 55.21, a time that was less than a half second off some teams in the finals.
Norwich's Nicole Jeffrey attempted to crack the top twenty when she placed twenty-first in the 1500 meter run with a time of 5:36.28. Jeffrey later placed thirteenth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:38.59.
Hailey Colabelli turned right around and buckled down after the 4x100 relay to compete in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:03.92, which earned her a eighth place spot overall.
Destiny Gladney managed a fifteenth place finish in the 400 meter hurdles when she ran a 1:18.85.
It was Marysa Campbell who managed to notch out a spot in the Long Jump for the girls when she launched herself to a ninth place finish with a jump of 15' even. This jump was followed by her teammate Vanessa Salerno in the Triple Jump who would see herself in sixth place after managing a 32'04.50" jump.
Once again for Norwich, the throwers impressed again, as Katelyn Shaver would medal in both the Shot Put and Discus, with throws of 30'06.50", and 99'05” to gain a fourth and fifth place spot respectively.
Norwich will be hosting Chenango Valley at home on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Greene
The Greene Trojans Track and Field had some highlights during the meet despite having the boys and girls teams suffer some in the overall standings. The Greene boys placed twenty-first with 4-points and the girls placed twenty-fifth, with 0-points.
It was Greene's Chris Klecha who stood out on the boys side when he managed a three way tie for second place in the Pole Vault. Klecha vaulted himself to a height of 11'06.
The girls side for the Trojans managed some standouts, starting with the 4x800 meter relay team of Mary Klecha, Grace Retz, Chloe Parks, and Katie Anderson when the raced their way into a tenth place finish with a time of 11:43.19.
The 400 meter dash saw Nicole. Flohr earn a respectable fifteenth place finish when she ran a 1:06.15. Flohr also managed seventh place finish in the 200 meter dash when she bolted to a 28.86, for the lady Trojans.
Next up for Greene is Unadilla Valley on Wednesday April 20, where they will travel to UV, BG and Hancock.
