OXFORD – The Oxford varsity girl’s basketball Holiday Tournament, began Dec. 29 and concluded yesterday evening, Dec. 30. Greene won in style as they claimed their fifth consecutive win coming at the Holiday Tournament.
This two-day tournament featured four schools from around the Chenango County area: Oxford, Greene, Afton and Walton.
Greene rolled through the tournament first beating Afton and then Walton. The Trojan ladies were by far the stand out team of the tournament, MVP honors were even given to Greene’s Katie Carey, Carey led her team in scoring for the final game posting the only double digit points in that contest at 11.
The two matchups on the first day of the tournament featured Greene against Afton, to which Greene would come out the champion in that matchup.
The second game of the evening saw the host Oxford square off against Walton, to which Oxford would go on to continue their losing streak bringing them to 0-8 on the season.
This first day results set up the following day as the tournament finale, with Oxford looking for their first win on the season in an attempt to take home third place in the consolation game at 4:30 p.m. against Afton., and Greene versus Walton following at 6:30 p.m.
Oxford would go on to lose to Afton, 44-35, as Afton secured their third place status in the tournament knocking Oxford to 0-9 on the season.
“We had a much better game tonight than yesterday. We had a lot better energy and a lot better effort against Afton,” said Oxford Girls Head Coach Chris Palmer.
Palmer explained that despite a slow start from his team in the first quarter which saw them immediately go down 13 to 9, they actually recovered in the second quarter, to come out strong, only allowing Afton to score 5 in the whole quarter. This has Oxford trailing Afton only by 2 at the half, as they were slated at 18 for Afton to Oxford’s 16.
“We actually drew within one point, with 7 minutes left in the third quarter. Rachel Seiler hit a three for us to have us to have us at 20-19 Afton leading,” said Palmer.
After a foul call that went in Afton’s favor, “The five minute mark of so, they had a girl who hit a three, putting them up even more and we just weren’t able to recover,” explained Palmer.
Afton would ultimately control the game as they led at the end of each half, beating The Blackhawks 44-35.
The girls came out fired up and ready to play, and it showed in their effort tonight, we just gotta keep working on the fundamentals,” said Palmer.
Greene faced off against Walton in the final game of the tournament in what proved to be a completely lopsided matchup.
