SHERBURNE – S-E Lady Marauder Savannah Irwin set an all-time record in Tuesday’s game, scoring 40 points.
Coach Karen Mulligan said, “The previous school record was 36 points set by Kelley Cooman.” This record was set 14 years ago.
In the first quarter, S-E’s Lexi Elderkin, Lilly Berg and Savannah Irwin each made field goals, Elderkin with three, Berg with two, and Irwin showing up to play with 12.
Irwin made three eight free throws in the game, just one more than teammate Berg.
Opponents the VVS Red Devils put up a fight, with six of their nine players scoring field goals throughout the game. Kaitlyn Reader led her team with field goals made at 7, and Alexa Kiser was just behind with five.
Reader led the Red Devils in scoring, putting up 21 of the 58 total points.
At the half, The Lady Marauders were up 29-23.
S-E brought in 21 additional points in the third quarter, to the Red Devils 12 points.
The fourth quarter saw more momentum from the Red Devils, who scored more points in the fourth than either team did in the previous quarters, bringing that quarter’s total for VVS to 23 points.
“We had some defensive break downs tonight,” said Mulligan. “But luckily we were able to get stops at the end of the game when VVS came back on us.”
The Lady Marauders brought blocks, steals and assists to the court. The majority of these were delivered by now-record-setter Irwin. She had two steals, two assists, and one block.
This is drastically different from the Red Devils, as stats showed that no one on the team had blocks, steals, or assists.
Red Devils Kaitlyn Reader scored a total of 21 points, the most for her team.
S-E’s Irwin successfully made eight three point shots, and Lexi Elderkin made one three pointer for the Lady Marauders.
Despite the fight the Red Devils brought in the fourth quarter, S-E was able to come out on top by four points.
“This was our fourth game in six days,” said Mulligan. “We had a tough win [Monday], so I wasn't sure how we would play [Tuesday].”
Not only did the ladies win their game Tuesday, Irwin was able to set a school record by bringing in 40 points for The Lady Marauders and also tied her own school record for threes in one game.
“Savannah was in a zone tonight,” said Mulligan.
Mulligan said after their long streak of games, the team is looking forward to a few days off before resuming play in the Unadilla Valley Tournament.
The Lady Marauders will play against Hamilton on Dec. 28 at 1:30 p.m.
