NORWICH – In their first meet of the season the Norwich varsity wrestling team looked impressive in their win against Susquehanna Valley on Tuesday, December 1, in Norwich.
The night’s matches started off at the 99 pound weight class with Norwich’s Mike Squires earning a forfeit. The Purple Tornado earned another forfeit at 106 as the Sabers had no wrestler to face Norwich’s Eli Rodriguez.
With Norwich now up 12-0, SV had their work cut out for them. The two teams would trade six point victories as SV won with a pin at 113 and Norwich’s Gabe Glanville took a forfeit at 120. Norwich would roll through the next two matches as Dalen Geislinger took the 126 match 8-0 and Ty Rifanburg won his 132 pound match 8-2.
The 138 pound match began a four match pin streak for the Purple Tornado, tearing through Sus Valley and sealing the victory. Zach Mills, Cole Rifanburg, Dustin Marvin, and Nick Murphy all earned pins and six team points for Norwich. “If tonight was any indication of how the season will go, we’re in pretty good shape,” said Norwich head coach Bob Hagenbuch. “We looked really good and really strong. We should roll right into the Clyde Cole Tournament on a good high.”
The night’s remaining matches would see pins and forfeits all around, as Norwich was granted two more forfeits at 182 and 195 and gave up just two matches at 170 and 220. The night would end on a Cole Riggins pin over SV’s Caleb Strong to seal the 55-30 win for Norwich.
Going into the Clyde Cole Tournament this weekend in Oxford look for Norwich’s Eli Rodriguez, a returning champion, to make another run at 99 pounds; as well as experienced wrestlers Cole Rifanburg and Nick Murphy to make deep runs as well.

WATERVILLE – Opening their season against Waterville, the Sherburne-Earlville girls’ varsity basketball team traveled into hostile territory and won 35-32.
S-E, led by Miranda Wright, started ahead and would stay ahead the majority of the game. Wright would finish the game with 11 points and eight rebounds for the Marauders. “After tonight I’m pretty optimistic,” said S-E head coach Karen Mulligan. “We just had to get out those first game jitters and work on putting the ball in the net a little more.”
Returning leading scorer Lilly Berg earned just nine points over the course of the game and would foul out early in the second half. “Losing Lilly early hurt a bit,” Mulligan said. “She is a big presence on defense and will be big for us again this season.”
At six feet two inches, Berg is a large presence on the court and will be essential for the games to come.
S-E plays again on Thursday, December 3, when they host Frankfurt-Skyler.

LAURENS - Traveling to Laurens last night, Tuesday, December 1, the Oxford boys’ varsity basketball team took on Laurens in their first game of the season. The Blackhawks would ultimately lose the game 65-52.
Laurens was up 18-12 on Oxford after the first quarter of the game and never looked back. Oxford attempted to match Laurens’ pace but was outshot and outscored the remaining three quarters of the game.
The Blackhawks were lead by Kevin Davis’ 16 points. Davis sunk four three pointers over the course of the game and was much of the offensive force on the Oxford team.
Oxford is now 0-1 on the season and will play again Saturday, December 5, when they travel to Elmira Notre Dame.
