Busy First Round At Canasawacta Country Club Member-Guest

By: Jim Testani

PLYMOUTH - A foggy morning turned into a beautiful day at the Canasawacta Country Club as their 57th annual Member-Guest Tournament got under way. Over 170 golfers made their way onto the greens and fairways as the day began with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

With most golfers shooting well on their opening holes, it was the team of Brain Loomis and Bryan Boyer who took the lead after a slow start. Finishing the day shooting a 66, five under par, and just two strokes of the three teams tied for second place at 68, Loomis and Boyer had an up and down round of play. "We stalled out a little after our first few holes shooting par after par," said Bryan Boyer. "But we started to come back after we made a few birdies."

Loomis and Boyer tee'd off this morning with the first group of golfers at 8 a.m. and started on hole 14. Only bogeying one hole the first round the two golfers took their lead later in the day. "We came back after Brian eagled 10 and birdied 11," Boyer said. "We went from two under to five under real quick."

As a whole the field shot consistently in the high 70's and the low 80's, an improvement from last year's tournament. This year 13 different teams are all shooting under the 71 strokes that is par for the course. Loomis and Boyer are the sole leaders at 66 while three teams are tied for second at 68, three are tied for third at 69, including last year's champions Matt Burrell and Craig Dawson, and six are tied for fourth at 70.

Looking forward to tomorrow's round Loomis and Boyer feel confident that they can fix today's miscue's and keep their lead. "We played pretty well off of each other today," said Brian Loomis. "When one of us had a bad shot, the other would do well."

Today's second round includes shotgun starts at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Teams will then be placed into flights for Saturday's final round based on the two days previous scores. The top teams will earn a spot in the Masters Flight for an opportunity to play for the course's title.
