Track and Field
WINDSOR – Norwich's girls claimed four first-place finishes, and despite a depleted lineup, racked up 120 team points to place second at the Section IV Class B track and field meet at Windsor Thursday.
Freshman Caroline Stewart won two events, placed second on a relay, and added a third-place finish to lead the Purple Tornado, who had just 12 girls available for the meet. "Going in short some kids seems to be the theme for this season, but once again everyone stepped up and did their job," said Norwich coach Shaun Horan. "They really got after it today and had some great performances."
Stewart, at most a part-time participant in the high jump this season, cleared a season-best five feet to win the event, and she narrowly missed 5-2 1/4 that would have broken a Norwich school record.
Later on, Stewart led a one-two finish in the triple jump with a leap of 35-5, while junior Vanessa Salerno backed Stewart up placing second (33-1).
Senior Morgan Hagenbuch and junior Katelyn Shaver continued their strong seasons. Hagenbuch captured the long jump (16-11 1/2), and Shaver threw the shot put a season-long 36-6.
On the boys' side, NHS junior David Bernstein posted what is likely the best throw in Section IV this season throwing the discus 158-10, and he doubled up in the win column taking the shot put with a throw of 47-4.
"That was just an unbelievable throw," Horan said of Bernstein. "David's really coming on strong; throws that we would be ecstatic about during the indoor season would be a bad day, now."
Norwich will take its select lineup to the Section IV state qualifier next Thursday at Vestal High School.
