Watkins Glen Denies B-G Class C Title

By: Patrick Newell

BINGHAMTON – Watkins Glen became the first team to eclipse the 40-point mark against Bainbridge-Guilford in nearly three months denying the Bobcats their first sectional title in 16 years.

Madison Gates scored 14 points for the Senecas, who halted the Bobcats' 16-game winning streak in Saturday’s Class C final at the Floyd L. Maines Memorial Arena, 43-37.

By no means was Watkins Glen an offensive juggernaut, and its defense had little to do with B-G's struggles from the free throw line. "I don't know what we shot (from the foul line), but it was terrible," said B-G coach Bob Conway.

For the record, the Bobcats went 7 of 23 from the charity stripe, a 30 percent clip that is calamitous in games of this magnitude.

Still, B-G’s scrappy bunch of young ladies remained within a possession or two of the second-seeded Senecas up until the final seconds. Watkins Glen's Amanda Pike sunk the final free throw with two seconds remaining to cinch up the school's first sectional title since the 1999-2000 campaign.

Perhaps the most surprising development was Watkins Glen's opportunism on the offensive glass. At the game's most critical juncture – under two minutes to play – Watkins Glen extended a possession two times with offensive rebounds. After nearly 90 seconds of ball control, Gates hit two free throws with 1:04 to play to give her club a 42-33 lead.

Story Continues Below Adverts

"We tried to run a nice, easy practice the day before, but honestly, at times we seemed sluggish," Conway said. "We were a little loge with everything we did offensively and defensively, but still, it comes down to making free throws."

The Bobcats trailed by three at the half, and remained three down entering the fourth quarter, 32-29. Morgan Bullis put back an offensive rebound a minute into the quarter closing the game to one.

Gates hit a foul line jumper on the next sequence, and after Bullis sunk one of two free throws, the Senecas took command.

Gates banked in a drive to the basket, Pike scored on a pick-and-roll, and Gates drove for another layup to complete a six-point run and up the lead back to eight.
