Norwich 61, Johnson City 52

JOHNSON CITY – Zan Stewart and Jamison Luke had big nights for the Purple Tornado, who won at Johnson City Tuesday for the first time in five years.

Stewart posted a second straight double-double finishing with 20 points and 10 rebounds to go with six assists. Luke had 18 points including 8-for-8 foul shooting, and he blocked four shots.

“Zan is the best player in our league, and he handled their pressure really well tonight,” said Norwich coach Tom Collier. “Jamo played great tonight; he was a force in the paint.”

Norwich started quickly leading by as many as 16 in the first half before the Wildcats trimmed to the lead in half by halftime, 34-26. The trio of Stewart, Luke, and Mike Oralls had 29 of Norwich’s points.

Johnson City closed the deficit to two points in the third, but that was as close as it would come. Carlos Ithier led the Norwich response with a three-pointer as Norwich rattled off six straight points to push the lead back to eight.

“They made a nice run at us, and our team didn’t bat an eye,” Collier said. “Johnson City is one of the best teas in our league, and they have a bunch of kids up from an undefeated JV team. It was a hard environment to play in, and this was a good step for us.”

Norwich had the margin up to double digits for most of the fourth quarter. Tre Bonham and Colin Stewart contributed big threes in the final quarter - their only buckets of the game.

Ryan Jones was the lone B-G player in double figures scoring a game-high 16 points. Five other Bobcats had at least six.

“We were rushing things a little bit in the first quarter,” said B-G coach Greg Warren, whose club trailed by three after one. “We slowed it down on offense, and we also turned it up on defense full court and in the half court. We played good team defense the last three quarters, and that was the key to our success.”

Sidney 48, Unadilla Valley 47

SIDNEY – Sidney’s Nick Meno hit two free throws with under 10 seconds to play to seal his team’s victory over Unadilla Valley Tuesday.

The Storm trailed 15-3 in the first quarter and still trailed by double digits through most of the third quarter. Down 46-44, UV picked up a steal near midcourt and had a layup attempt that was off the mark. Two subsequent offensive rebounds and missed layups led to a loose ball scramble. Meno was fouled retrieving the loose ball before icing the game from the line.

“If we make one of those three layups, it could have changed everything,” said UV coach Matt Osborne. “I was very happy the way we battled back and didn’t give in, but we didn’t come out strong in the first half and dug ourselves a big hole.”

Ryan Postma scored 13 to lead UV, and Hank deGlee added 10 points and 10 rebounds. UV hosts Hancock Thursday.
