Owego 94, Norwich 71

NORWICH – Although victory was out of reach, Norwich closed its home meet with Owego in strong fashion Tuesday night at Norwich High School.

The Tornado’s 400 freestyle relay lopped off four seconds from its best time this season, one of five season-best performances. “Right now, our main goal is to get decent times to seed us well at sectionals, and go from there,” said Norwich coach Kevin Diefenbacher.

Connor Supensky, Dan Zieno, Jon Manwarren, and Killian Benedict made up the winning final relay. Two events earlier, Benedict won the 100 backstroke in a season-low 58.81, and Manwarren took the 500 freestyle in a season-best 5:28.17.

Bruce Winter ((breaststroke) and Zieno (50 free) had Norwich’s other two victories against a deep Owego team that brought 33 swimmers to the NHS deck.

Norwich hosts Holland Patent Thursday.

Windsor 95, Greene 86

GREENE – Windsor claimed all 13 points in the diving competition, and that was the difference in its nine-point victory over Greene Tuesday night.

The Trojans started the meet winning the 200 medley relay in a season-best time of 1:59.18. Liam Reid, Kurt Hendershott, Garrett Mowatt, and Craig Lord got the host club off to an auspicious beginning. From there, Windsor won the next seven events. Greene closed with a victory in the 200 free relay, victories by Reid and Hendershott, and the meet-closing 400 free relay.

“We talked at the beginning about every race being important, and we were looking for good swims the last 25 (yards),” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “In about half the races, we had kids moving up to a scoring spot from sixth to fifth, fifth to fourth...we had some exceptional swims tonight.”

Greene (1-3-1) competes in the Vestal Invitational Friday.

Norwich 44, Chenango Valley 30

FENTON – Norwich won its thirteenth dual meet of the season against a Chenango Valley club that is in the running for a Section IV Dual Meet Tournament spot.

“They’re a lot like us,” said Norwich coach Terry Hagenbuch. “They have lighter guys they need to bump up in weight.”

Hagenbuch pinpointed three wins as keys to the win. Nick Murphy (138) pinned veteran Billy Liberati in five minutes; Trey Muserallo (170) squeezed out a 7-6 win over Nick Pert, and Jakob Franklin (182) was dominant taking his match by technical fall. “Those were big wins for us,” Hagenbuch said.

Norwich (13-4) is idle until Tuesday when it hosts Oneonta.
