Norwich 60, Owego 35
BINGHAMTON – Norwich cruised into the region one finals in the Mirabito Stop DWI Holiday Classic Sunday afternoon rolling past Owego for the second time in five days.
Colin Stewart was Norwich’s top scorer bucketing a season-high 13 points, and that included 3-for-3 shooting on three-point attempts. Senior Zan Stewart added 11 points, and was the best player on the floor, said head coach Tom Collier.
“We got up 18 or 20 early in the second quarter, and then they made a little run at us,” Collier said. “Colin made a big three for us to stop their momentum.”
Norwich was especially dominant in the first and third quarters when its starting unit saw its most minutes on the floor. During those to quarters, NHS held a 33-5 advantage. To Owego’s credit, it outscored Norwich in the final quarter, although the game’s outcome was no longer in doubt. “Coming off that win on Tuesday (89-18), we knew Owego was a better team than that, and we knew they wouldn’t shoot 14 percent in this game,” Collier said. “Owego may have been outmanned tonight, but they played hard and competed the whole game against us.”
Collier singled out a defining play in the fourth quarter as his team’s play of the game. With about five minutes left in the game and Norwich’s ahead by 25 points, junior forward Jamison Luke had the ball stolen from him near midcourt. As Owego’s Brandon Hathaway gathered the loose ball, Luke made a full-out dive for the ball, and he got two hands on the ball to force a jump ball.
“That play epitomized what we preach to the team,” Collier said. “We’re up 25 points and a two-point layup for them wouldn’t have mattered because we had the game well in hand. But Jamison sacrificed his own body so that they could not score two points. He refused to be beaten; to give that basket up. Our whole bench erupted, and it really energized our team.”
Norwich plays Kennedy Catholic Tuesday at 9:15 p.m. at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

DERUYTER – Defending Class D state champion New York Mills raced to a 17-3 lead in the opening quarter on its way to a DeRuyter Tournament finals victory over Otselic Valley Saturday.
“We came out cold and were tentative with our shooting, and that’s something you can’t do against a team the caliber of New York Mills,” said OV coach Dave Loomis.
Terry Nichols, a key contributor on last year’s state title team, had a game-high 29 points for New York Mills.
Angel Marshall scored 12 points for OV – all on three-pointers – and Matt Neal bucketed 10.
OV advanced to the finals beating the host Rockets by 15 on Friday.
OV established a 12-point halftime lead with a big second quarter. Neal had 15 points in the victory, Jason Olin scored 14, and Marshall netted 10. “Both teams struggled offensively, but we played hard, and we were able to hold the lead down the stretch,” Loomis said.
