FENTON – With the game on the line, Norwich buckled down.

After Mark Mullins hit a three for CV to close the Tornado’s second-half lead to three, Norwich scored on an inside hoop, and proceeded to get four straight defensive stops to close out the club’s third straight victory.

The loss was the first this season for the Warriors, who started the season with four consecutive wins, the last two in Southern Tier Athletic Conference play. “We did some good things, and we did some bad things,” said Norwich coach Tom Collier. “When we needed a stop, our halfcourt defense was tough, and we got the stops.”

Norwich jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter, and had the lead up to 14 in the second quarter when starters Michael Oralls and Jamison Luke picked up their second fouls, and were forced to take a seat on the bench.

Carlos Ithier keyed the early attack with all seven of his points. Zan Stewart scored six in the first, and Tre Bonham hit a three ball off the bench.

CV was able to trim the NHS 22-10 first-quarter lead back to 32-24 at halftime. Mullins led the Warriors with eight in the second quarter, but Mullins was held to that lone three-pointer in the second half.

“We had a great start and we were playing with a lot of energy,” Collier said. “We lost two key players, and they made a little run at us. Zan played really well for us, and he held things together when Michael and Jamison were on the bench.”

Oralls had 10 points in the second half for Norwich and finished with a team-high eight rebounds to go with four assists. Stewart added 11 points for Norwich, while Luke and Ithier split 14 points down the middle.

“There are still some things affecting the way we’re playing and we’re aware of those things and we’re working toward correcting them,” Collier said. “If you’re looking for the silver lining, we’ve played four good opponents, and we’ve won three of them despite making a lot of mistakes. We’re not where we want to be, but we’re getting there.”
