Blood found in Ramsaran house, van: Investigator does not positively ID source

NORWICH – Blood was found in Jennifer Ramsaran's van and in her home, although the source of that blood was not positively identified by the New York State Police forensic investigator, according to testimony given Thursday at the Chenango County Courthouse.

In the ninth day of the Ganesh R. Ramsaran murder trial, Jason Miller of the New York State Police testified that he searched through Jennifer Ramsaran’s minivan at the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on Dec. 17, 2012. The van had been found one day prior by Jennifer’s father, Thomas Renz.

Miller said after he was provided a signed search warrant to search the vehicle, he photographed the van’s exterior and then worked his way to the inside. An inventory was conducted of the contents of the vehicle, and if there was anything found that may have been evidentiary, it was bagged and labeled. The van was then checked for blood, hairs and dusted for fingerprints, he said.

From his observation of the exterior, Miller said the van had a “heavy layer of dirt and road dust.”

Upon opening the vehicle, he recorded the positions of the seats and took note of the gauges and mileage. The keys were inside the vehicle, but Miller did not say where and he was not asked.

Miller noted some trace evidence throughout the van. He said there were numerous small blood stains.

Miller recalled there were four small blood stains on the interior of the driver’s side door, a couple of small blood spots near the gas pedal, and a small stain on the interior of the front passenger side.

The investigator added there was a “larger” blood stain in the rear area of the vehicle, in the area of the mid and rear seats, though size was not specified.

Items collected from the van included a swab of the interior door handle, napkin with a stain and hairs affixed, a carpet cutting from the area with the larger blood stain, a pair of sunglasses, garbage, some vegetation, and a black and silver iPod touch — the item in which it’s been said Jennifer used to play games online and communicate with various people, including a man from London.
