Johnson, Walling Back To Defend CCC Title

By: Patrick Newell

PLYMOUTH – Corey Johnson and Eric Walling made one life-long memory a year ago at the Canasawacta Country Club Men's Member-Guest Tournament. They hope to make another together this weekend as it could be the last time they team up as partners.

Johnson and Walling, teenagers a year ago, became the youngest championship duo in the 5 1/2-decade history of the tournament winning by two shots.

Johnson will be a freshman at Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C. this fall where he will study Golf Management. A summer golf internship in 2015 is part of Johnson's curriculum, so he will be unable to team up next summer with Walling for a third time. "It's looking like this year will be our last time together (in this tournament)," Walling said in a phone interview Tuesday evening. Waling, too, is on track for a degree in Golf Management at SUNY Delhi. After an internship at Seven Oaks in Hamilton last year, he is completing his second internship at the Broadmoor Hotel and Resort in Colorado Springs this summer. "They have three championship courses (at the Broadmoor), so it can only help your game."

Johnson and Walling served notice that they were among the best teams in the field last year when they shot a second-round 65 that was highlighted by two eagles. One came when Walling holed-out a 160-yard shot on the par-four fourth, then he drained a 15-foot eagle putt on the par-five 13th. Playing with previous champions Bryan Smith and Todd Seiler in that second round, the Smith-Seiler team had a short putt for eagle on 13 that was not only missed, but turned into a three-putt par.

The two teams were neck and neck to that point, so instead of standing pat, the improbable events turned into a two-shot swing.

"That eagle on four was nice, but that eagle on 13 was even better," Walling said.

Johnson had not even started his senior year of high school when he entered with Walling, who had just completed his first year of college. Johnson was the first high school student to participate in the tournament, that will enter its 56th year Thursday morning.
