Norwich Deals Late Inning Lashing In Johnson City

JOHNSON CITY–Norwich’s Hannah Eddy got her first start after shoulder surgery, throwing ten strikeouts in a five run victory over Johnson City.

Eddy had surgery in the fall, but showed now signs of it, Throwing mostly fastballs and hitting her spots.

“They couldn’t catch up with it,” said Norwich varsity softball head coach Scott Moore.

The Tornado batted around in the seventh inning, scoring five runs.

Edy started the rally with a bunt single, hustling to bet out the throw.

Shannon Moore followed with an RBI double, driving in her starting pitcher.

Kassidy Seary walked and a Breanna Cashman sacrifice fly to right field scored Shannon Moore.

Richelle Seaman-Lawton reached on an error that also scored Seary

Another error put Morgan Loucks on base and scored the fourth run of the inning.

Stephanie Meyer came up to bat and capped off the final inning with an RBI single back up the middle.

Eddy remained in the game in the bottom of the seventh, up seven runs.

She would give up a Molly Secord double and allow two runs.

“She was full of nerves because she didnt think that shed be throwing in the seventh,” said Scott Moore, “ She was trying to overthrow... so I went out to calm her down.”

Eddy settled down after the mound visit and got the outs to seal the win in JC.

Norwich plays Saturday in the TESTA Tournament followed by a home doubleheader Monday at 4:00 against Chenango Forks.

Deposit 15, Unadilla Valley 0

NEW BERLIN–Deposit made short work of Unadilla Valley Thursday, scoring 15 runs in only five innings.

With 14 hits and six extra base hits, the umpires called the game due to the 15 run limit.

Unadilla Valley had only two hits and committed six errors.

“Our hitting is something that we are struggling with right now,” said Unadilla Valley varsity softball head coach Hannah Johnson, “Sometimes we execute on defense perfectly and sometimes we just lose it.”

Deposit’s Kate Tiffany and Aubrin Smith each had a double and a triple.

“I think that Deposit is a very well-rounded team. They have really good bats and are a cohesive team on defense,” Johnson said.

Afton 23, Oxford 0

OXFORD–Afton pitcher Tanya Hatton threw a no-hitter in a five inning, 23 run win over Oxford Thursday.

Hatton had 14 strikeouts for Afton, with only two walks.

This was Oxford’s fourth game in four days.

“Toward the end of the game I thought we started picking up momentum but we couldn’t get our bat on the ball,” said Oxford varsity softball head coach Heather Pizza.

“Afton has an excellent team. they play year-round and are well coached,” she said.

The Blackhawks had eight and gave up seven extra base hits.

Oxford pitcher Lorrin Parks had 11 walks and three strikeouts.

“I thought, under the circumstance, that she worked really hard,” Pizza said.

Oxford plays Sidney and Afton plays Unatego, both at home on Monday.

Johnson City 14, Norwich 4

Norwich struggle with errors Thursday, committing six in a road loss to Johnson City.

Johnson City scored four runs in the first inning when the Tornado made two errors in a row.

It was a two run game to start he fourth but JC batted around and had six hits, scoring seven runs.

“They put us away in the fourth inning,” said Norwich varsity baseball head coach Rich Turnbull.

JC had the only extra base hits of the game. Collin Arzanitakis went 2-5 with a double and three runs scored.

Norwich loaded the bases in the fourth inning but was not able to capitalize.

JC pitcher Nick Chilson gave up nine hits to Norwich, striking out six and allowing four runs.

Robert Jeffrey and John Yacano both went 2-4 with Jeffrey stealing two bases and scoring a run.
