COVENTRY – The Coventry Town Museum is set to present its 9th annual Civil War Commemorative Event beginning at 10 a.m, Sunday, Oct. 13. Each year, the Coventry Town Museum Association honors one of the area’s Civil War veterans. This year's event will honor Private Edward W. Nickerson, “Master Tradesman, Family Man, Civil War Cavalryman.” It will be held on the grounds of the Coventryville Congregational Church, 115 County Road 27, Coventry.
Edward W. Nickerson is the grandfather of Coventry native and businessman Donald Nickerson.
This year's program received the Russell J. Perllman Award of Excellence for proposing the “Most Outstanding Project” for 2013.
According to Vice President of the Coventry Town Museum Association Janine Hakim, attendees will have the opportunity to stroll through the beautiful backdrop of the grounds and surrounding buildings throughout the day.
The day will feature the Living Re-enactor Encampment of The 114th Regiment, NY Volunteers, as well as other re-enactor units organized by the Living History Guild.
Visitors will be able to meet and speak with President Abraham Lincoln and First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln. General Ulysses S. Grant and General Rawlins will also be present – in the form of re-enactors – so that guests can strike up conversation. Hakim added there will also be Civil War music presented by a Civil War bagpiper.
A guided tour of the Coventry Town Schoolhouse Museum will be led by members in period costume.
Other living history re-enactment exhibits include: The Life of Civil War Cavalrymen and Their Horses, The Equipment They Used, The Elmira Soldiers Relief Organization, The Railroad During the Civil War and The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War.
Guests will join with the descendents of Private Nickerson and the Living History Re-enactors at 12:15 p.m. – behind the 10th NY Cavalry Regimental flag – and march into the Coventryville Congregational Church to the sounds of the Oxford Brass Quintet, added Hakim.
