NORWICH – Maine-Endwell had Norwich’s number in football and basketball, but not boys’ tennis.
In Tuesday’s STAC semifinal, the Tornado blasted the Spartans sweeping all seven matches and giving up just one set.
The victory vaults Norwich into the league championship where it will face Ithaca at a date to be determined.
“We really wanted to win the Class B championship outright,” said Norwich coach John Stewart, who was referring to the co-champion status his team earned along with M-E last weekend. “This kind of validates that we were the better team. Coming back after sectionals and to still having that desire and competitive spirit, I really proud of how we went out and played today.”
The closest matches came at first singles and second doubles. Alexander Stewart downed John Munley in the top singles matchup, 7-6, 7-6. At second doubles, Brendon Budd and Alec Weaver rallied from a first-set loss to best Jake Zuber and Kyle Henry, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.
Taking comfortable wins at singles were Colin Stewart, Matt Craig, and Roman Cwynar.
Grant Brightman-Danny Carson and Cameron Edwards-Carlos Ithier earned decisive victories and first and third doubles respectively.
“I really think this win makes a case for us being the best Class B team in Section IV this year,” Stewart said.

Harpursville 9, Greene 6
GREENE – Harpursville took the lead for good scoring four runs in the top of the sixth to eliminate Greene from Section IV playoff competition Tuesday.
It was the first win for Harpursville in three meetings with the Trojans this season. Erin Avery tripled in the sixth and scored the go-ahead run on one of Greene’s four errors in the game.
“Give Harpursville’s girls credit, they came out and played with a lot of confidence today,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “It was a tough way to end the season losing two of our last three at home.”
Morgan Ellis had a two-run single in the first for Greene, whose bats were held in check the rest of the way by winning pitcher Erika Whitney.

BAINBRIDGE – B-G pitcher Austin Bauerle was nearly unhittable, and the batting combo of Tim Parsons and Jacob Mazzarella led the Bobcats to a first-round Section IV playoff victory Tuesday night.
Parsons had a two-out single in the seventh, and on a hit-and-run play, Mazzarella doubled to the right-center gap scoring Parsons from first with the winning run.
Parsons tripled in the bottom of the fifth, and scored his team’s first run on a Mazzarella single.
Bauerle gave up just one hit in the game striking out 15 and walking two. “Our defense was solid, but they didn’t have to make too many plays,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “Austin was just in a zone, and he overpowered them.”
B-G plays at top-seeded Seton Catholic Central on Thursday.

Utica Notre Dame 7, Sherburne-Earlville 1
SHERBURNE – Utica Notre Dame sophomore Zach Kesterson overpowered Sherburne-Earlville’s lineup allowing two hits and striking out 14 in a Section III playoff victory over the Marauders Tuesday.
Locked in a tight game, UND scored four runs in the top of the seventh to ice the contest. Andrew Macchia had a two-run single and finished with three RBI on the day. Alex Rocci had two hits including a two-run single in the fourth that made it a 3-0 game.
“Kesterson threw heat, and he was probably the hardest thrower we’ve seen the past two years,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks. “He had a three-quarters delivery, and hid the ball well. We tried making adjustments, but couldn’t get anything going.”
The Marauders finish with an 8-10 record.
