Track and Field
GREENE - Unadilla Valley sophomore Dylan Thomsen ran away from the competition, and never looked back.
Thomsen broke his own school record in the 1,600 meters, and upended top-seeded Jack Hillenbrand of Harpursville by 20 meters timing 4:30.3 to win his first Midstate Athletic Conference title.
Thomsen jetted to the front on the opening turn, and ran his first 800 meters in 2:11, three seconds clear of Hillenbrand. The gap never closed for Thomsen, that despite a slight letdown in the third lap. He widened his gap on the backstretch of the bell lap, and was never tested.
Thomsen broke his own school mark by nearly six seconds, although the sophomore doubted he would lower his mark. “I didn’t think I would set a new PR (personal record), especially after the third lap,” Thomsen said moments after the race, still catching his breath. “I still had a little bit left on the final lap.”
The rest of the Midstate Athletic Conference championship results will appear in the Monday edition of The Evening Sun.

Norwich 14, Unadilla Valley 13
NORWICH – Norwich’s offense came to life in the nick of time rallying from eight runs down after four innings in Thursday’s non-league victory over Unadilla Valley.
UV plated four runs in the top of the fourth to extend its lead to 10-2, and had everything going its way. “I thought we were dead in the water after the fourth inning,” said Norwich coach Rich Turnbull.
The Tornado scored six in the fifth and five more in the sixth to take a one-run lead. With a chance to close the door on UV, Norwich brought in lefty ace Cody Barnes for the save.
Barnes yielded a lead-off single to Nate Shackleton, who promptly stole second and third base. Shackleton then scored on a Norwich error during a rundown.
Barnes then retired the side setting up Norwich’s winning tally. After Josh Haines singled and Robert Jeffrey walked, Rob Wheeler singled in Haines with the game-winner.
“We just weren’t ready to play at the start, but they had some miscues and we were able to capitalize and make things happen late in the game,” Turnbull said.
Chris Trevisani drove in five runs for Norwich. The sophomore infielder had a three-run double in the fifth and a two-run double in the sixth. Colby Griffin added two hits and he drove in four runs.
Shackleton was 3-for-5 on the UV side, and Kyle King went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Canastota 3, Sherburne-Earlville 2
CANASTOTA – Sherburne-Earlville’s bats fell flat at Canastota Thursday as the top four hitters in the S-E lineup hit a combined 1-for-14 in a Center State Conference loss.
Andrew Frost had an RBI single for Canastota in the second, and Tyler Jeffries’ RBI hit in the fourth gave the Raiders a three-run lead.
S-E’s Mick Khoury had an RBI single in the fifth, and Jesse Yerton added an RBI in the sixth to close the margin to one run.
S-E failed to capitalize on a golden scoring opportunity in the fifth. After loading the bases with no outs, Canastota turned a double play on a line drive out to right field and a throw back to first base for the second out.
