HANCOCK - Strong pitching and just as strong defense led Oxford to a key road win over Hancock Friday.

With the win, the Blackhawks earned a spot in the top four of the Midstate Athletic Conference playoffs giving them an opportunity to play for the league championship.

“We’ve had pretty good pitching most of the year, and Kevin did a great job in this game,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer.

Tied at 2-2, Oxford scored three runs in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Richard Ryan snapped the tie with a bases-loaded walk, and Davis lofted a short single just over the Hancock defense scoring two more runs.

Cameron Heggie was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Jeff Lawton had two hits and two runs scored, and Matt Moore finished with two hits and an RBI single in the first inning.

SIDNEY – Sidney blew open a two-run game with nine runs in the fifth inning in Friday’s romp over the Trojans.

The first four hitters of Sidney’s lineup did most of the damage against Greene accounting for 10 of 13 basehits. Damian Zimmer and Matt Fischer finished with three hits, while Brandon Bessett and Billy Kozak had two hits apiece. Starting pitcher Nate McDonald pitched six shutout innings for the win.

“We did okay until the fifth inning, then the wheels kind of fell off,” said Greene coach Steve Burghardt.

Sidney scored its nine runs in the fifth on the strength of six hits to go with three Greene errors and three base on balls.

Chenango Forks 13, Norwich 6, first game

Norwich 8, Chenango Forks 0, second game

CHENANGO FORKS – Norwich salvaged a doubleheader split and ended its three-game set over the weekend behind another dominant pitching performance from junior left-hander Cody Barnes.

Barnes matched his career-high with 18 strikeouts in a four-hit shutout over Forks in the back end of Saturday’s twinbill.

Barnes, who was injured in the first inning of Monday’s loss to Chenango Valley, proved he was 100 percent healthy. “He was pretty amped up, and I know he wanted to prove to everyone he was okay,” said Norwich coach Rich Turnbull. “The whole team had more confidence (in the second game), especially with Cody pitching.”

Josh Haines and John Yacano gave Barnes all of the cushion he would need delivering two-run singles in the first inning. Yacano finished with a team-high three RBI, Colby Griffin was 3-for-4 with two ribbies, and Ricky Runyon also had two hits.

Forks walloped Norwich out of the gates in the opening game of the doubleheader batting around and scoring 10 runs in the first frame.

Barnes and Cody Graves had two hits for NHS, who settled in after the inauspicious start. “We just didn’t come off the bus ready to play in the first inning,” Turnbull said.

Friday, Norwich had difficulty containing Susquehanna Valley’s bats as the Sabers pounded NHS pitching for 19 basehits.

SV scored in every inning, and led 5-1 after one inning. Matt Hassig doubled twice finishing 3-for-3 with two RBI. David Matthews and Vince Lamantia added three hits apiece.

Rob Wheeler had two hits and two RBI for NHS, and Chris Trevisani connected on a two-run singles. Barnes, Runyon, and Griffin finished with two hits apiece.

“It wasn’t like we didn’t hit the ball. We had nine runs and 11 hits, and that should win a lot of ballgames,” Turnbull said. “You can’t give up 15 runs, 19 hits, and commit five errors, and expect to win.”

Bainbridge-Guilford 9, Afton 2

Walton 13, Afton 6

AFTON – Austin Bauerle won his second game of the week for B-G striking out 14 and allowing just four Afton hits Friday.

Bauerle helped his own cause with two hits and three RBI. Tyler Ouimet, Bauerle’s battery mate at catcher, added two hits and two ribbies. “Bauerle was dominant today, and we never really put up a big threat, especially after the third inning,” said Afton coach Ron Rapp.

Connor Graven Briggs tripled and scored one run for Afton.

Saturday, Trevor Zandt had a two-run single in Walton’s eight-run fifth leading Walton past Afton.

Zandt and Joe Sinistore had two hits apiece, and the Crimson Knights struggled with finding the strike zone in the latter innings.

Josh Davy hit a three-run triple in the second for Afton, and Matt Olin cracked a solo homer in the seventh. “We had some bright spots, just not enough of them,” Rapp said.

Afton plays at Oxford today.
