Greene art walk spotlights 100 years of The Sherwood

GREENE – The Village of Greene’s business district came to life Wednesday night as hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the centennial of The Sherwood Inn and enjoy an art walk through the village, thanks to a partnership with the Arts Council of Greene.

Live entertainment was provided on the front porch of The Sherwood by The Fabulous Moonlighters, a 16 piece big band.

The grand re-opening of The Sherwood is set for late June, yet the centennial celebration allowed for those interested to get a glimpse of the renovations that have taken place since the new owners took over and view some of the hotel's history.

According to Oxford Town and Village Historian Vicky House, George & Peg Marr, of the Greene Historical Society, worked for months on documenting the history of The Sherwood in words and pictures, which were displayed along with a few of the remaining dishes saved from the 1962 fire at the hotel.

Clothes and furniture dating back 100 years, when The Sherwood first opened its doors, were on display as well, according to House.

Greene Mayor Phillip E. Brown read a proclamation declaring May 1, 2013 as "The Sherwood Hotel Day." Proclamations honoring the Dunlap family (new owners of The Sherwood) and The Sherwood's 100th anniversary sent from Senator Thomas W. Libous and Representative Richard L. Hanna were read by Greene's former mayor, Marcia Miller.

"The Art Walk last evening was a huge success," said Sharon McLean of the Arts Council of Greene. "It was a win-win for not only us, but The Sherwood as well. All participating business owners are very pleased with the additional traffic it brings to our downtown landscape."
