Bainbridge-Guilford 9, Greene 8 (8 innings)
GREENE – Bainbridge-Guilford rallied for two runs in the seventh to force extra innings, and scored three in the top of the eighth in holding off the Trojans yesterday in the completion of Wednesday night’s suspended contest.
The Bobcats scored their two runs in the seventh with two outs and no runners on base. Devon Rivera singled and Corbin Palmer hit a ground-rule double. Two wild pitches allowed B-G (8-1) to score the tying run.
The Bobcats continued to surge in the top of the eighth. Mark Cordner had an RBI sacrifice fly, and Lucas Butcher along with Rivera had single ribbies to create a comfortable three-run lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, Greene nearly recovered its shortfall of runs. Alex Csigi and Dalton Brower had single RBIs closing the deficit to one. With runners on second and third, B-G pitcher Austin Bauerle recorded a game-ending strikeout.
“It was an amazing game,” said Greene coach Steve Burghardt. “At the end, it wasn’t like they were piling on and we were in tears. It was like we just finished a prizefight, and there was that sense of relief and that mutual respect.”
Greene had an early lead, and easily could have padded the advantage with a couple more timely hits. The Trojans left at least one runner in scoring position in every inning, and 12 runners in scoring position for the game. “Their pitchers worked out of a lot of trouble,” Burghardt said. “One clutch hit anywhere, and it probably does it for us.”
Butcher was credited by Burghardt with two run-saving plays at shortstop, and B-G rightfielder Cole Webb made a diving grab of Lane Whittaker’s line drive to save at least two more runs. On Greene’s side, outfielder Joe Beckwith had a web gem of his own recording a diving grab.
Butcher and Palmer had two hits for B-G, while Trevor Parrish had two hits and an RBI for Greene (7-4).
Greene travels to Unadilla Valley today.
