Norwich 10, Susquehanna Valley 7

CONKLIN – Winless on the 2013 season and winless against Susquehanna Valley for over two decades, Norwich’s varsity softball team pulled off perhaps its greatest comeback win in program history.

The Tornado rallied from an early 6-1 deficit, and overtook the Sabers with long-ball heroics. Down to its last out and its last strike, freshman Kassidy Seary delivered in the clutch – big time.

The Tornado infielder smacked a grand slam to center field thrusting the Tornado ahead for good. It was the second homer of the game for Seary, who hit a two-run homer in the fourth to cut SV’s lead to 6-3. “Kassidy had been struggling this year, but it came together for her tonight,” said Norwich coach Scott Moore. “Her second homer was probably the farthest one I’ve seen hit. It would have cleared our fence by at least 50 feet.”

Molly Moore also homered for Norwich hitting a solo shot to rightcenter in the fifth inning. Molly Moore, Shannon Moore, Kat DeTomi, Katie Callahan, and Seary all finished with two hits, and Norwich collected 14 hits on the night against a pitcher, Sierra Storm, who blanked NHS a season ago.

Freshman hurler Shannon Moore overcame a rocky start to pick up the win. She allowed just one run over the last five innings by changing speeds and keeping the ball down.

“The defense was shaky and I was definitely concerned early,” Scott Moore said. “They had their three triples in the first two innings, and I don’t usually call pitches, but I had Shannon go more to her changeup and drop, and she pitched great.

“The biggest thing is that everybody hit the ball tonight. It was a real joy to see it happen.”

“It was probably our best game of the season when you consider the baserunning and defense,” said Greene coach Rick Smith.

Laura Durdon and Gabby Sherwood led Greene (3-2) with 3-for-4 days. Ellis, Ayers, and Brink all had two hits. The Trojans host Hancock today.

Greene 9, Harpursville 8

GREENE – Greene’s Zach Lindow rebounded from a terrible start to a game, and the Trojans rebounded from an 8-1 deficit to win its sixth game in seven starts this season.

Lindow was roughed up for eight runs in the top of the second prompting a mound visit from head coach Steve Burghardt. Burghardt decided to stick with Lindow, and the move paid off. “If I had anyone else warmed up, I would have taken Zach out,” Burghardt said. “He kept the right attitude, and he made one of the most outstanding comebacks in a game that I’ve seen.”

Lindow was nearly unhittable the last five innings tossing five scoreless innings and striking out nine. Meanwhile, the Greene offense chipped away. Alex Csigi had an RBI single in the third that closed Harpursville’s lead to 8-6, and Csigi’s single in the fourth scored Lane Whittaker with the go-ahead run.

Alex Kozisky went 3-for-4 with an RBI to top Greene’s batters. The Trojans also improved their record in MAC division play to 4-0. “Their kid threw decently, but we were able to put a bat on the ball, and we played flawlessly after the second inning,” Burghardt said. “It was fun.”

Oxford 19, Delhi 7

OXFORD – Oxford erased a 2-1 deficit scoring 12 runs in the bottom of the third en route to its third straight victory Thursday.

The Blackhawks drew four walks in the frame and also benefited from two Delhi errors to prolong the inning. Andrew Golden had a two-run double and Richard Ryan followed that with a run-scoring double. Jeff Lawton and Cameron Heggie each singled twice in the game, and Lawton’s 4-for-5 day with three RBI led the Oxford offense.

“We drew some walks in that big inning, but the big thing is that we showed good patience at the plate,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “When we did see a strike, we were able to deliver some hits.”

Heggie pitched five innings and allowed two runs for the victory. Ryan had three RBI in the game, Heggie scored four runs, and Golden drove in four runs.
