Norwich 65, Susquehanna Valley 53
CONKLIN – Known for its defensive exploits of late, Norwich’s offense had one of its best performances of the season against unbeaten and state-ranked Susquehanna Valley Tuesday night.
The Tornado (12-3), winners of seven straight games, received a career-high 25 points from junior Michael Sutton. Kyle Edwards helped Norwich’s second-half surge scoring all 15 of his points over the final two periods.
“Michael was just on fire tonight,” said Norwich coach Tom Collier, who said Sutton finished 10-for-14 from the field. “He wasn’t even hitting the rim with his shots.”
Sutton was a big reason Norwich was able claim a 30-27 halftime lead hitting four threes and scoring 15 in the opening half.
Edwards, who struggled from the field in the opening half, scored 11 straight points for Norwich in the third, the last nine onthree three-pointers as Norwich expanded its lead to 12 points.
Norwich hung in on the defensive end despite giving up substantial size. The Sabers’ Brendan Normile had 25 points, but no other Sabers player reached double figures. “I thought Michael Oralls did a tremendous job defensively on Normile, and (Normile) still got 25,” Collier said. “The big thing for us is that we controlled the boards and didn’t give them second chances. That was our number one goal tonight.”
Danny Carson added 10 points for Norwich, who with one league loss share the best record in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference along with Maine-Endwell and Susquehanna Valley. “If you look at Susquehanna Valley, I’m sure a lot of people wouldn’t have given us a chance tonight,” Collier said. “They’re a balanced team, but we play so hard and we play fundamental hard defense from endline to endline. Every one of the kids is buying in to what we are selling. Great defense and effort gave us the results tonight.”
Norwich hosts Windsor on Thursday.
