Norwich 69, Chenango Forks 34
CHENANGO FORKS – Norwich is still unbeaten in 2013.
The Purple Tornado registered their most lopsided victory of the season Friday night at Chenango Forks, and stretched their winning streak to six games. During the winning streak, Norwich has won by double digits each time, and no opposing team has reached the 40-point mark.
“Our goal on defense was to hold them under 40,” said Norwich coach Tom Collier, whose club now sports an 11-3 record.
Norwich offset a 32 percent shooting night with 30 made free throws in 42 attempts. Danny Carson was 8-for-8 from the foul line in the first half alone scoring 10 of his 14 points, and Mike Sutton added 11 of his 13 as Norwich opened a 36-20 halftime lead.
“They hung with us pretty well in the first quarter,” Collier said. “The difference was that they switched from zone to man-to-man (defense), and I think that was a mistake. That’s why we got to the foul line so much.”
Norwich’s starting lineup was done for the day by the end of the third quarter with the lead swelling to 21 points. Over the final eight minutes, the Purple reserves padded the advantage. Matt Burke scored 12 of his season-best 13 points over the final eight minutes, and Michael D’Abbraccio netted all eight of his points.
Leading the NHS defense was sophomore Mike Oralls, who grabbed 10 of his club’s 39 total rebounds. Four other players had at least two steals. “The biggest thing for us now is that we’re getting healthy,” Collier said. “We got off to a good start again in this game, and having Kyle (Edwards) back in the starting lineup has helped everyone’s confidence.”
Norwich plays at unbeaten, state-ranked Susquehanna Valley on Tuesday.

Greene 52, Oxford 41
GREENE – After Oxford sliced a 10-point halftime deficit in half midway through the third quarter, the Trojans embarked on a 10-2 run that extended into the first three minutes of the fourth to pull away for the win Friday night.
The victory secured Greene’s spot as the number three seed in the MAC tourney later this week, while Oxford falls to the four seed.
Dan Treadwell had seven of Greene’s 10 points during the run, and his three-point play with 4:55 left in the game gave Greene a 44-31 lead. “Oxford does a good job controlling tempo, and I thought we got some good looks on offense, we stayed patient, and took what their defense gave us throughout the game,” said Greene coach Rick Smith.
Treadwell and Zach Wentlent scored 15 apiece for Greene, while Brandon Davis tossed in 13. The Trojans’ balance offset a 27-point night from Oxford senior Andrew Golden.
“We knew Golden was going to get his points,” Smith said. “We were concerned about Moore (Matt) and Heggie (Cameron) hitting three-pointers, and I felt we did a good job rotating in our zone.”
Greene plays at Unatego Friday while Oxford visits top-seeded Sidney on Friday.

Sherburne-Earlville 52, Ilion 38
ILION – Tied with Clinton and Ilion in the Center State Conference standings, the Marauders knocked the Tigers down a peg with a supreme defensive performance Friday.
S-E’s 15-point halftime lead was sliced to two points early in the fourth before a 15-3 spurt to end the game cinched up the win. Jesse Yerton hit two threes and scored nine of his 18 points in the final quarter. Austin Jasper did most of his damage in the second quarter scoring eight on his way to an 18-point game.
The Marauders’ team defense had trouble with Ilion’s Hershel Ivey (29 points), but contained the rest of the Ilion lineup. “I told the team at halftime, even if Ivey gets 30, we’re still going to win because we are holding the other guys down,” said S-E coach Kevin Vibbard.
Facing Canastota Saturday, S-E blitzed the Raiders in the first quarter racing to a 22-5 lead. Matt Smith scored 10 in the first quarter and Jasper six. Smith hit two of his team’s four three-pointers, and the lead grew to 19 points after three quarters. “My biggest concern Saturday was having a letdown after such an emotional win the previous night,” Vibbard said. “We came out and played extremely well at the start.”
Smith scored 13 to top S-E’s scorers and Jasper finished with 11. The Marauders (12-5) host Canastota on Friday.
