HARPURSVILLE – Unadilla Valley gained that signature win it had been looking for the past four seasons defeating four-time defending MAC champion Harpursville Tuesday night.

The Storm (9-1) turned a five-point deficit to start the fourth into a nine-point lead, and weathered a couple of late three-pointers to hold off the Hornets.

After Harpursville’s Miranda Drummond closed the UV lead to two with a three ball at the nine-second mark, UV senior Jordan Anderson sealed the win making a pair of free throws with three seconds left. “We just kind of chipped away at them in the fourth quarter,” said UV coach Brandi Backus. “We turned them over a couple of times, and had a couple of finishes on fast breaks. All of sudden, I looked up at the clock and we were up nine.”

UV senior forward Amanda Off was plagued with foul trouble in the first half, and sat most of the second quarter. During that time, Harpursville seemed to have control of the game taking an eight-point lead into halftime. “The first half was a lot like last year when we played them here,” Backus said. “We just couldn’t get into a flow on offense. We looked tired and it was like the game was already over. I just told them we needed to dig down and have a big second half.”

Off had 14 of her team-high 19 points in the second half, and Taylor Davis closed with seven in the fourth quarter to score 16. Anderson added 12 points to go with five assists. Off also charted 11 rebounds, and Corrine Izard picked up five blocked shots.

“I thought we might wake a sleeping lion since (Harpursville) was coming off a loss at Unatego,” Backus said. “Once we went on that run, the whole team was energized. We wanted to limit Drummond and (Savannah) Murray on offense, and make the other kids try to beat us. That’s what we did.”

HARPURSVILLE – Justin Hofer’s best game of the season pushed his career point total over the 1,000-point mark Wednesday night at Harpursville.

Needing 27 points to reach the milestone, Hofer scored a game-high 31 points, and added five steals as UV won its third straight game. “All of his points came in the flow of the offense, and he wasn’t forcing anything,” said Storm coach Matt Osborne of Hofer. “They were paying close attention to Justin, but we had good ball movement, and he knocked down his open shots.”

Hofer was 4-for-4 from the field in the first quarter including a trio of three-pointers, and had 17 points by halftime leading his club to a 33-21 advantage.

The Storm’s superior depth allowed them to pull away from the Hornets in the second half. David DuFresne added 14 points for UV . “We’re playing with a lot more confidence, and the bench is coming in and doing a solid job of defending and taking care of the basketball,” Osborne said.
