Norwich 101, Owego 85
NORWICH – Unbeaten Norwich withstood its sternest test of the season Friday night beating Owego for the first time in at least a decade.
The Purple Tornado (6-0) split the 12 events with the Indians, but showed superior overall depth. Entering the final event with a sizable lead, Norwich just needed to place among the top three to sew up the win. True to the tenor of the meet, the two NHS relay entries placed second and third.
“When I set the meet up, I told the guys that every point in every event would count,” said Norwich coach Kevin Diefenbacher. “And they did. If Owego took first, we came right behind them with a second and a third.”
Norwich opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, and led by eight points after the diving competition. Curtis Woodard kicked off a strong second half of the meet winning the 200-yard individual medley (2:18.01); Greg Todd led a one-two finish in the 100-yard butterfly clocking 1:00.96; Norwich took the 200-yard free relay; and extended its margin after Killian Benedict’s victory in the 100-yard backstroke and Nick Mooney’s triumph in the 100-yard breaststroke.
“The guys performed really well, and as it stands right now, we’re heading toward a division title showdown with Chenango Valley on January 25th,” Diefenbacher said. “We have our front line guys winning events, but we also have the second and third guys in each event, and that’s making a difference.”
