S-E, UV Advance To Storm’s Tourney Championship Game

NEW BERLIN – Sherburne-Earlville and Unadilla Valley will meet in a tournament final for the second time this season after each advanced in Friday’s first-round tournament games.

S-E freshman Savannah Irwin led her club down the stretch scoring 10 of her season-high 18 points in the final quarter against Cazenovia.

The Lakers briefly led in the fourth after a Christie Klein three, but Irwin had two fourth-quarter threes of her own, and a steal and layup in the final seconds wrapped up the victory.

Jordan VanAlthuis also scored 18 for S-E to go with six assists, while Lilly Berg had 13 points and seven rebounds.

Taylor Davis scored a season-high 22 points for Unadilla Valley, who rolled past Hancock.

Davis had nine points in each of the first and third quarters. “It was definitely a slow start for both teams, but once we starting pressing, that got us into the flow,” said UV coach Brandi Backus.

Amanda Off added 17 in the win and Jordan Anderson scored 13. The tournament final, scheduled for Saturday, was postponed until a later date due to inclement weather.

Norwich 48, Johnson City 35

BINGHAMTON – At the Pete Hyde Tournament Friday, Norwich beat Johnson City for the second time in a week pushing its lead to 20 points in the third quarter for its third straight victory.

“They just had a hard time handling our pressure, just like the last time we played them,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett. “Once we pushed the lead out, we were able to work on some things and give kids more playing time who don’t normally play as much.”

Jennifer Borfitz had 14 points and six steals for NHS (5-2), Cassie Sutton dished out six assists, and Breanna Cashman netted nine points to go with five blocked shots. Shelby Benjamin also swatted four shots.

The NHS junior varsity team extended its winning streak to six beating JC, 41-37. Kassidy Seary scored 10 and Meghan Komendarek added nine points in the win.

BAINBRIDGE – B-G earned its second in of the season taking control of Friday’s game against Windsor in the third quarter.

Down by three to the Black Knights at halftime, Abbey Smith scored nine in the third quarter for B-G as it moved ahead by seven. Taylor Palmatier added nine points in the second half. “We’ve had a lot of bright spots the last three games, and Taylor has been giving us a third scorer,” said B-G coach Bob Conway.

Smith finished with 16 points, Palmatier 13, and Morgan Bullis scored nine points and pulled down 12 boards.
