NORWICH - Absent a wrestler in every weight above 145 pounds, the Tornado gave up nine forfeits, and dropped its initial match of the 2012-2013 season Wednesday evening.
The Tornado won four matches, three of which came from the Rifanburg brothers. Ty Rifanburg (99) picked up a forfeit, while older brothers Cole (106) and Tristan (138) won by pin. The Tornado’s other victory came at 145 with Frank Garcia blanking the Wildcats’ Nick Bidwell, 6-0. Garcia built a 4-0 lead after two periods earning a late first-period takedown, and a reversal in the final five seconds of the second period. “Frankie has a little bit of an injury, but he was still able to beat one of their better guys,” said Norwich coach Joe Downey. “He wrestled a good match, and he didn’t quit.”
Downey only had six wrestlers available for the first match, but expects to fill some of the empty slots this weekend at the Clyde Cole Wrestling Tournament in Oxford.

Greene 72, Dryden 12
GREENE – Despite missing three-time state tournament qualifier Mike Beckwith, the Trojans had little trouble in season debut win over visiting Dryden Wednesday.
Stacked in the upper weights, the Trojans won every match from 160 to 285 pounds, and were buoyed by the return of freshman Christian Dietrich (195). Dietrich, a 2011 Section IV champion and state place finisher, missed all of last season with an injury. In his first match in nearly two seasons, Dietrich rolled to pin in 1:03 over the Lions’ Dan Atwood. Also garnering pinfall victories were Nate Banks (113), Zach Orzell (126), Brandon Wheeler (132), Tyler Dickman (138), Trevor Parrish (160), Dan Dickman (171), Joel Roselle (182), Nick Adams (220), and Dan Haskell (285).

DELHI – Bainbridge-Guilford got off to a fast start in its 2012 season-opening game building a 16-point lead en route to a first-round tournament win at Delhi Wednesday.
Brooks Harmon, Corbin Palmer, and Austin Bauerle combined for 17 points in a 25-9 first quarter. Harmon sparked the attack nailing two of his team’s three three-pointers. “We were pushing the ball up in transition well, and we got good looks on the break,” said B-G coach Greg Warren. “We struggled at times in our halfcourt offense, but we consistently played good defense.”
Bauerle posted a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Palmer scored 15, while Harmon tacked on 10. The Bobcats play Delhi in the finals Saturday at 5 p.m.
