NORWICH – A pair of individuals were remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in court on Monday – on $200,000 and $50,000 cash bail respectively – while a third pleaded guilty to a felony sex crime and will serve one year in the local jail.
• Patrick W. Ford II, 41, Norwich, pleaded not guilty to two counts of first degree attempted murder of a police officer, a class A-1 violent felony; second degree attempted murder, a class B violent felony; three counts of first degree criminal use of a firearm, a class B felony; second degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class C felony; three counts of menacing a police officer, a class D felony; and six counts of first degree reckless endangerment, also a class D felony.
Indicted by a Chenango County grand jury in October, it’s alleged that Ford, on Aug. 30 in the Town of Pitcher, repeatedly fired a 40. caliber Glock handgun at a Chenango County Sheriff’s Office deputy and sergeant, a New York State Police trooper and several civilians near a State Rt. 23 Pitcher residence. The incident followed an alleged motor vehicle accident involving Ford and his nine year old son, who was also present throughout the alleged shooting. Ford, according to his indictment, “did attempt to cause the death of another person,” the intended victim being a police officer, and did attempt killing said officer while he was “engaged in the course of performing his official duties.”
According to Chenango County First Assistant District Attorney Stephen Dunshee, Ford could face a maximum of 75 years in state prison if convicted, calling him “an extreme flight risk,” despite the fact that he’s a lifelong Chenango County resident with no prior criminal history, as stated by Ford’s attorney, Public Defender John Cameron.
Ford was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $200,000 cash bail and will re-appear in court at a later date.
• Edward J. Knuth Jr., 27, Norwich, was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $50,000 cash bail following his arrest on an active bench warrant Nov. 4 by Norwich City Police officers.
It’s alleged that Knuth, on or about Oct. 24 or 25, violated the terms of his interim probation, consuming and/or possessing alcohol.
In August of 2011, Knuth – once a part-time corrections officer at the Chenango County Correctional Facility – was charged with second degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class C felony; first degree unlawful imprisonment, a class E felony; and third degree assault, second degree menacing and criminal obstruction of breathing, all class A misdemeanors. At that time, he was accused of detaining, choking and threatening another individual during an alleged domestic dispute that involved a loaded .380 automatic Diamondback pistol. In November of 2011, Knuth pleaded guilty to one count of second degree attempted criminal possession of a weapon – a class D felony – and was sentenced to one year of interim probation. He could face up to seven years in state prison if found to have violated the terms of that probationary sentence.
