LANSING – Unbeaten Lansing made the best of the sloppy, foul footing at Oneonta’s Soccer Hall of Fame field Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats had a pair of goals in each half, and repeated as Section IV Class C champions with a shutout of the Trojans (16-3).

Lansing upped its mark to 19-0 on the year, 18 of those wins by shutout. Heading into the state playoffs, Lansing has now outscored its opponents by a combined 77-1. “They are so skilled at every position,” said Greene coach Rick Tallman. “They’ve played together consistently for years, and during the offseason. They are a well developed unit.”

Bobcats senior forward Ellington Hopkins figured in all four of his team’s goals, and fellow senior Nate McIntosh scored twice. Cobi Byrne had Lansing’s other goal, and it was the opening tally of the game. Byrne, following a Greene clear attempt, scored on a deflection midway through the opening 40 minutes. No more than two minutes later, McIntosh raised the margin to a pair of goals getting a helper from Hopkins.

Early on, though, Greene had the better of the play. That is, until the Bobcats adjusted to the field conditions. “The field conditions were pretty bad, and neither team had better footing,” Tallman said. “I think their overall experience took over. They are a little older and have played together longer.”

Lansing put the game out of reach early in the second half with Hopkins netting a left-footed shot 13 minutes in, and McIntosh picking up his second tally just three minute later.

Despite the program’s second Section IV finals loss in four years, the Trojans (16-3) are poised to make another run at a sectional championship next year. “I think the arrow only points up for us,” Tallman said, who will lose leading scorer Alex Leone. “Losing Alex is a big hit, but we have that next-man-up mentality. As long as we continue to progress, I hope to make it at least this far next year.”
