Canastota 2, Sherburne-Earlville 1

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville was unable to sustain its quick start.

Canastota rallied for two second-half goals Tuesday in a comeback victory over the Marauders (2-5 overall).

Julia Collins tallied for the Raiders at the 15:37 mark knotting the game at one, and Kelly Mason scored the game winner just over four minutes later. “We had some opportunities to tie it up, we just got a little panicky in their penalty circle,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. “I was pretty happy with our defensive recovery, and the midfield did a good job setting up the offense. We came back strong after they took the lead, we just didn’t have a stick in the right place to score the tying goal.”

BOYS’ SOCCER

Greene 4, Unadilla Valley 0

GREENE – Greene dealt Unadilla Valley its first Midstate Athletic Conference loss winning by shutout Tuesday afternoon.

The Trojans (7-1) scored twice in each half with Alex Leone totaling two goals and two assists. Freshman Luke Day and Kurt Bartholomew scored in the first half for Greene. Day scored on a fine individual effort after a Leone pass, and Bartholomew ripped in a hard shot from 18 yards out for the two-goal advantage. “I think some people were doubting us after losing to Delhi early this year and UV had beaten Delhi,” said Greene coach Rick Tallman. “This was kind of a statement win.”

Tallman said he typically hands out a Snapple award to single out a game’s top player. He wasn’t able to make that choice after the win yesterday. “I couldn’t give it out. Everyone played outstanding,” Tallman said.

Greene hosts Sidney today.

McGraw 1, Otselic Valley 0

SOUTH OTSELIC – A misclear in the OV defense end found the foot of McGraw player Mike Smith, who redirected a spinning shot into the goal with 11 minutes left in the second half to give his team a one-goal shutout of the Vikings (4-2) Monday.

OV defenders Matt Neal, Jason Olin, Travis, Sheldon, and Connor Smith shut down the McGraw attack for most of the game, said Vikings coach Jacob Preston. “We just got a bad bounce on that goal – literally,” Preston said. “Our offense had multiple point-blank headers that went wide of the goal. Even though we had the ball in our offensive third quite a bit, we lacked our normal finishing skills.”

The Vikings play Madison on Thursday.

Summary

(0-0 at half)

Goals-assists: (M) Mike Smith, 1-0.

Shots-corners: (M) 11-5, (OV) 15-5.

Saves: (M) Ryan White, 5, (OV) Jon Liuzzo 4
