Curtis Woodard put Norwich up a goal early, then a Woodard crossing pass to Cameron Prime was finished on the far right post for the two-goal halftime lead. “We possessed the ball better today and played much better defense,” said Norwich coach Steve Prime. “We only made two mistakes and one of them led to a goal, but we had the ball in their end quite a bit instead of defending in our end all of the time.”

Prime and Chris Trevisani had second-half goals for Norwich (3-6), who play at Seton Catholic Central Friday.

FIELD HOCKEY

Sherburne-Earlville 3, Herkimer 2 (OT)

HERKIMER – Sustained offensive aggression paid off for the Marauders Wednesday afternoon.

Shelby Scheffler completed a hat trick scoring the game-winning goal at the 5:55 mark of overtime to lift the Marauders to a road victory. S-E never led in the game until the final goal, and needed a Scheffler goal with eight minutes left in regulation to send the game into extra minutes.

“Shelby plays on the weak side, and a lot of deflections come her way,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. “She was very patient, and it was almost like she stood for a moment (with the ball) on the last goal. She didn’t panic and took a good shot.”

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Owego 5, Norwich 2

NORWICH – Owego stopped Norwich’s seven-game winning streak winning all three three-set matches in Wednesday’s STAC non-division matchup.

It was a major improvement for the Tornado over the first meeting this season, said NHS coach John Stewart, who had wins from Kristi Orioli at first singles and Breanna Cashman at third singles. “The first time we played Owego this season, it was a 6-1 final and we never had a shot,” Stewart said. “This late in the season, we were right on the cusp of beating them. It shows we have improved and are still our there competing, but it’s still tough to lose the close ones.”
